Ohhh that's a good reason to keep Al out of the reach of the military. I hope we get to see Lan Fan will be healed back up sooner or later! I love Armstrong. He's amazing!

Although its not really explained in Brotherhood, it is in the original 2003 anime, but Ed is determined to keep Al close to keep an eye on him, and also to keep him out of the hands of the military. Winry's grandmother Pinako warned Ed about the military being corrupt, so he doesn't want Al to be a State Alchemist too. Ed went through the automail surgery and rehabilitation in one year, when Pinako and Winry told him that it would take at least 3 years. And he had dual automail surgery, so he had to learn to work with two limbs - Lan Fan would only have to deal with one, so if the 3 years was based on the fact that he had to account for two limbs, then she might be able to do it within a year to a year and a half. Major Armstrong is interesting as a character - he went against his own beliefs by fighting in the war, but then he also said he ran, so he might technically be considered a deserter, but he still has a place and rank as a State Alchemist, which could imply that Father and the homunculi want to keep him close. I think there's a line in the manga where Bradley basically tells Armstrong that the reason he's never been promoted despite the many years he's served in the military is because he's got too soft of a heart.
