The Expanse 4x3 Subduction Early Reaction!

Wooo political nerd! I'm still optimistic, though it's difficult some days. This presidential primary is wearing me oouuutt

Thanks for bringing up MFA and other issues that affect most of us today. I'm a total political nerd, and even though I use TE to escape reality for a moment, I always see so many connections to what is, and has always happened with humanity. We never learn and just keep repeating the same mistakes over and again. Strangely enough, I'm still an optimist lol.

Very interesting to read your thoughts on Naomi and Murtry! You made some really important distinctions :)

Hehe, when Amos tells Murtry something that needs to sink in, he gets his name right.

Thank you Eric for being so reliable and so interesting! As a physician I do share your ideals and politics and I appreciate you drawing the analogy to today's world as that is what amazing art is supposed to do. I wanted to make some observations about this episode which sink in on the rewatch. This episode (and Naomi's arc) is very much about choices (in fact all the top female leads are in tracks where they have to make choices which have very serious consequences for their future.) But focusing on Naomi for a moment, she was hoping to have a choice about whether she could live or function on a planet or "down a gravity well" and it turns out she doesn't really have that choice she hoped for. I find that a huge metaphor for so much of what happens in each individual life: there are circumstances where we have clear choices and others we hope for choices which turn out not to be there. She talks to Felcia about going to University and Felcia and her mother both point out that they apparently don't have "a choice" about that future. Some reactors point out that Murtry murders the Belters he feel are threatening him and his RCE crew and is justified in his actions, however it is the amazing Amos who points out the difference between killers: Amos always protects the good and the innocent, whereas when Murtry was in the clinic and Naomi collapsed on the floor, he made the choice to walk out leaving Lucia to pick her up off the floor. No good person who truly defends the innocent and the helpless would do what Murtry did and he feels no qualms about displaying his nature to these two women in that moment. He is NOT Amos. In every subtle confrontation between Murtry and Amos, Murtry (Morty, Marty, Murphy...) backs down showing him to be the coward he truly is. And while Amos instigates arguments, he is really just highlighting the ridiculous antagonism we self generate (haha, over a generator!) and he saves himself because he sees and appreciates the sliver of good in Chandra Wei and of course uses that relationship to keep him and his own crew safer than they would otherwise be. Fantastic writing, fantastic series.

Another great and perceptive reaction as usual. You mentioned you hope some of the elements of the story would continue; they will. As we've all learned throughout previous seasons and episodes, everything that happens, or is said, is important. 😀
