This film just got released early february 2021 in South Korea. I've been waiting to watch it in theater so long. I watched it today, and I realized that I saved your reaction for this moment.
To answer one of your question, South Korean grandparents are way nicer to their grandchildren than they are to their own children, too. I think it's kinda universal in East Asia - China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan...
In a confucianism-based society, parents - especially mothers - usually being judged by how they brought up their children. Even when full-grown man or woman make their own choices, people will still seek responsiblilty from their parents, saying "You failed to teach your children a lesson, so you spoiled your child." something like that. Those kind of pressure drives Asian-parents being strict and harsh to their chilren, not allowing freedom to make trial and error.
Meanwhile, grandparents are much less responsible to their grandchildren since they are not primary caregiver. All they need to do is just love their grandchildren and be nice. I guess that is the main reason why Asian parents are so harsh and Asian grandparents are way nicer.
....And about enduring parents saying same thing over and over again for LITERALLY million times, welcome to the club. : )
Thank you for your reaction. I'm glad that I could finally share your thoughts and emotions after a year of waiting.
