The plot has been revealed, even though we don't have all the details yet, but the idea of the country-wide transmutation circle has been exposed. The funny thing about Izumi stealing the supplies is, if you remember, she tossed Ed and Al onto a deserted island for a month and ordered them to survive with just a knife and the clothes on their back, no alchemy. She was bragging that her teacher threw her out into the Briggs Mountains in winter (supposedly under the same conditions), but she survived by stealing supplies from the Mountain Guard. So Ed and Al actually had the harder survival task - they were also younger. Izumi was an adult when she went through that. (There's a OVA that explains Izumi's training in the north).
