Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 41 The Abyss Early Reaction!

This series feels like it's firing on all cylinders! I didn't know there was a movie! I look forward to getting into all of it :)

Ohhh... I like the wording you used about sacrificing something. Makes me think what exactly is the equivalent exchange for his insistence on not killing and how much it'll cost him in the end

Oh yeaaah definitely remember that! And yeah, I guess that's true. Darnit! I definitely would have used it :P

This is probably one of my favorite episodes before we really get into the endgame stuff. Other than the beginning when Ed lost his limbs, this is the first truly serious, story-impacting injury to a character. Yes, Mustang was nearly killed by Lust earlier, but his death wouldn't have directly impacted as many people - if Ed had died, it would have directly affected Ed, Al, Winry, May, Hoenheim, and the country as a whole, since he's one of the sacrifices needed for what Father is doing. I don't know if you'd be interested or not, but there is also a FMAB full-length movie called The Star of Milos. It's not the best part of the canon and it does really mess with the timeline of the series a bit, but it's fun to see Ed and Al again. Is that something you would consider viewing when the series is done? There's also the OVAs, which I think I mentioned previously, and the blooper reel.

I love that, as you pointed out, Ed's choice to save the Chimeras is what saves him, but at the same time it's his sense of mercy with Kimblee that gets him in that situation in the first place, which results in him sacrificing some years off of his life in order to survive. It's a really interesting narrative choice, because when you have a character in something that refuses to kill, either they find some loophole and everything works out, or they are forced to kill. Here, Ed refused to kill and he did come out of it alive, but just barely, and only because Ed had to sacrifice something else instead. Oh, and as for why the group couldn't hide out in the mines: they don't know how long they need to hide out, and they don't exactly have a lot of supplies with them. They need to go somewhere they can get food and etc, and they wouldn't find that in an abandoned mine. :) Great reaction, as usual!

It's mentioned in an earlier episode that Al's body receives nutrients and sleep through Ed so they're definitely linked somehow. Ed falling unconscious is probably what's triggering Al to blackout Don't feel too bad about the chimera finding the philosopher's stone seconds after it was too late. Even if it had been found before Ed performed the transmutation, I'm sure he would have refused to use it.
