Mulan Movie Reaction!

Before we can get to this film, we have to delve into the politics of it a little more because the film has been completely politicized due to Liu Yifei’s coming out to support the police brutality. #BoycottMulan was trending back when she said it and it’s here again during the release.

Supporting police brutality is reprehensible. We in the United States and in other places have seen it in our own communities. And even though Mulan, one of China’s greatest works of fiction, is about a woman going against norms and what is expected of her, the society as a whole is extremely repressive. I don’t know how much personal liberty Liu Yifei has.

A lot of people say IF they watch the film, they’ll pirate it so as to not support Liu Yifei and Disney. Disney could have chosen not to cast her or condemned her comments. And while I have no love for this actress or for Disney as a business, do I want to punish all the other actors and the crew for their mistakes? And there are only so many Hollywood movies with East Asian representation. Crazy Rich Asians, which was problematic in its own ways to a much lesser degree… and what was the last one before that? Joy Luck Club? If this doesn't do well financially, how does it affect future representation?

So I think it’s up to each of us individually to weigh how we feel and what the right thing to do is for each of us with regards to this movie.
