You're right, that was Greed in the intro. Envy (and this probably is the same for the other homunculi) just doesn't get humans and their emotions. He thinks he's superior but his biggest downfall is underestimating the human spirit.

Rogue Agent

Definitely agree this is one of the best episodes! So much raw emotion

One of the best episodes in this series! The raw power and the control Mustang has is so freaking impressive. He managed to literally surround and protect his allies from the immortal legion while burning them to a crisp. The animation for that scene was beautiful, and I love the way Ed looked at Mustang when Mustang said it had to be done. I think that was the first time that Ed really realized how dangerous an opponent Mustang is - after all, Ed wasn't there was Lust was killed, Al was. Seeing Envy turn into Hughes...it just pissed Mustang off all the more. He even acknowledged that he knows Hughes is dead and he's accepted it. This isn't one of the "five stages of grief". This is pure vengeance. We have seen Envy manifest weapons as well. When he and Ling fought in the woods, right before Ling and Ed got swallowed by Gluttony. He turned his arm into a blade. It's not quite the same thing as manifesting a gun, but he is capable of doing so. This is probably one of my favorite episodes for a lot of the reasons you named - Mustang being amazing, the different philosophies at play - vengeance versus justice, what Scar said about Mustang falling to the flames of his rage if he kills Envy, Ed's very obvious concern for his commanding officer... and the ending - who is who? Is Envy posing as Hawkeye or Mustang? Or are the the real Hawkeye and Mustang and Envy's ability to shape shift is messing with their heads?
