Arrival Early Movie Reaction!

Comments

When the aliens said "There is no time", I knew exactly what they were talking about. I have watched several movies already, even a series where the aspect of time is explored. Mastered, by more intelligent races then us. Most of the time it involves a fifth and even sixth dimensions. Even out of the material world all together. I would recommend such movies, but you will already know what they contain. Blind reactions are often more fun. You have already watched one of them actually: "Interstellar". At the end the main character enters a dummed down for our understanding representation of it. To warn his daughter in the past. Also I'm glad they didn't go the route of trying to teach the aliens to speak one of the human languages in such a strange way. Starting with names? What the heck? They will think what you write is the word for our species. Like seriously? I know about 3 languages to various degrees. We never started learning one with our names. Even before knowing the alphabet of given language. Btw English is one of the harder ones to master ... all those exceptions.. Easy to learn the basics, but hard to learn to speak it more fluently.

Chekhov's gun is the concept you were thinking of. I second the above recommendation to read the story. This movie captured it as best as I think possible but it is a different experience. Love this movie and enjoyed watching your reaction to it.

Regarding Shang's wife's dying words, I don't understand Mandarin, but Eric Heisserer, who wrote the screenplay, said her last words were, "In war, there are no winners. Only widows."

Franklin Shepard

It really is a fascinating movie! Glad you enjoyed the reaction :)

also...people were surprised that amy adams wasnt nominated for an oscar for this because her acting carried the entire movie!

yessss finally! i've been waiting. this is seriously one of my favorite movies of all time. i was wondering throughout the movie if you would start to guess about where the movie was going...and it was soooo gratifying when you were just as shocked as the rest of us. the movie is just beautiful and beautifully made. the way they edited scenes to reveal just enough - especially when hannah was talking about his mom and dad talking to animals, the way they blurred the bird just enough that the reveal really makes you gasp. and the climax with the general! so so so well made, how time just flowed through them until one revealed what the other would need to know in the past from the future. for me, i dont think they'd necessarily know everything that's going to happen. the way the movie was edited seems to suggest that louise only sees the future when it relates or affects the past...the non zero sum game, the little tube coming to get her, the general...and the rest of her's and ian's and hannah's future showed itself to her when the aliens departed because she needed to make a decision if she should pursue it or not. that's just me, though. i had so much fun watching my favorite movie with you. i always hope other people will react to arrival but they never do lmao i've also read the book and it is different but equally wonderful, i suggest you check it out. looking forward to more of your reactions!
