the participants from the 1v1 rounds do have to come from the pair that went into the 2v2 rounds. as they chose weiss and yang for the 2v2, ruby and blake are no longer in the tournament. if they win, it will have to be either weiss or yang to advance to the 1v1. as for the rigging, we saw cinder choosing this match at the end of the last episode, saying, “let’s give the crowd a good fight.” i think team CFVY are 3rd or maybe 2nd years (i think beacon has four years but not sure) and idk how old emerald and mercury are, but as you said, clearly young enough to pass for students. first years like blake, weiss, yang and all of team JNPR are 17, with the exception of ruby who was let in early and is 15. no matter the age, emerald and mercury are very skilled and it’s more than a little intimidating. did you notice how coco saw yatsu behind her in the forest when he had never even left the geyser field? you see her starting to shake after that, which is understandable tbh. also the song that plays during that fight is one of my favorite rwby jams.
i think this episode worked to improve a lot of peoples’ opinions of winter but i also wish she would quit hitting weiss. tbh the more you learn about their family the more everything about weiss makes sense lmao. semblances are unique to the individual, except for in the case of the schnees, who have a hereditary semblance. summoning is just part of it, obviously we’ve seen weiss’s glyphs and such. winter says “think to your fallen foes” because it’s like calling and summoning representations of enemies they’ve defeated, but ones that will do their will and protect them. the tiny sword by the caterpillar shows that weiss /did/ manage to summon without realizing it, although in a mini form and in hindsight she totally almost skewered that poor caterpillar.
i love qrow and admittedly am glad this is the only scene with him saying some nonsense like the skirt length thing. honestly i think he was probably deflecting cos we know he works with oz, going on very secret missions, and therefore can’t actually tell them what he was doing. a lot of people think it’s a reference to a fullmetal alchemist scene (the 03 version) where mustang raves about “tiny mini skirts”, as qrow was originally voiced by vic mignogna.
remember what yang told blake in burning the candle?
“Our parents were Huntsmen . . . and our mom took on missions around the kingdom. Her name was Summer Rose, and she was, like Super-Mom . . . one day she left for a mission and never came back . . . Summer wasn't the first love he [their dad] lost . . . The first was my mom. He wouldn't tell me everything, but I learned that the two of them [Ruby/Yang’s dad and Yang’s mom] had been on a team together with Summer and Qrow, and that she'd left me with him right after I was born. No one had seen her since.”
the girls may have different mothers biologically, but summer raised them both. yang considered her a mom as well. and now we know that was team STRQ (stark)! we know most of their names from volume 2 so we can easily put together that S is for Summer, ruby’s mom, meaning she was the leader like her daughter. T is for Taiyang (Tai for short), ruby and yang’s dad. R is unknown in terms of name but must be Yang's mom. and of course Q for Qrow.
i’d suggest taking a closer look at the photo qrow’s got. notice yang’s reaction to the picture? and the way qrow hid a face with his thumb? other interesting things to note -- the stain from what looks like the bottom ring of a cup over summer, perhaps as if a glass was placed there to hide her face, and what many fans theorize to be water stains from teardrops scattered across the photo. the photo’s good for a better, albeit younger, look at taiyang too. it’s also our first look at summer rose at all!
