Sheldon is high functioning autistic (aspberger's syndrome) while the others each have their own quirks. Leonard is the most "Normal" of the 4 but also has his own self depricating behavior. Each of them needs to grow including Penny! Its really a great show and you will come to love it and the humor which is quite intelligent. My brother went to Cal Tech and he thought the show was hilarious when I made him watch it one time!
