It's implied Penny has friends outside of the main cast we just never really see them. But again as we've seen Penny sometimes hangs out with people who don't treat her well. The only thing I can say in defense of the guys is that their inexperience in social things makes it understandable their reaction to Penny's problem. But yes it would be better if they could empathize with her. I tip my hat off to Sheldon though for at least attempting to at first be there for Penny. (In his own way) Alot of Sheldon's mannerisms puts him on the autistic umbrella and it's intersting to watch him learn social norms from those around him. Anyways enjoyed the reaction as always.
