Thank you for that discussion because I have never thought about it that way. That parents with racist or discriminatory beliefs can actually severely impact the relationships they have with their children. I am a physician who interacts with people of all genders, races, ages and political beliefs at a very vulnerable point in their lives (mostly with chronic and worsening illness) and I find that I can do this because I suspend my own biases and simply treat everyone the same as a human being in trouble. I have even worked with federal and state prisoners from time to time and I have found the best approach is exactly the same, you and I are humans and I am here to help you. Sort of like in Jerry Maguire: "help me to help you!" (love that film BTW). As a woman I have been lucky not to suffer any serious assaults although I was once the focus of a sexual assault (by a black man) who was the room mate of my boyfriend at the time who was also black. My boyfriend came down hard on him and defended me and rescued me for which I have always been grateful. I did not see this as a black issue but rather a male - female issue. My mother taught me and my brother that all people deserve respect and thus even at the age of 5 I questioned my paternal grandmother when she warned me not to use a drinking fountain a black child had just used. I thought even then that that was pretty nuts and wrong. So you are right, I don't bring up racism or politics with my southern relatives and we can all get along fine. Thank you again for your courage in tackling tough topics. I have yet to view some of the other ones but plan to do so. You give me great hope for the future!!
