neo back for vengeance! don’t worry, you didn’t really forget anything. we never got neo’s backstory. all we really know is that she was basically roman’s right hand. honestly the best insight to her character is the song playing during the fight but you may want to just wait to listen to the ost and hear it in full rather than try to pick up the lyrics in tbe scene. but clearly roman’s death is a big deal for her and I think shes blaming cinder bc he died while working for cinder. remember he told ruby he didnt even really believe in what he was doing but he knew if he didnt help them he’d end up dead? and speaking of death, weiss definitely seems to have the heaviest reaction to the bodies, im not totally sure why. im guessing she maybe just hasn’t dealt with death as much as the others/in the same way. summer never came back so ruby and yang never saw her body but they were still faced with their mother dying at a young age and they grew up in a small area with huntsmen as their guardians so who knows what they’ve seen over the years. we know ruby encountered at least one town full of bodies when she was with RNJR and she saw pyhrra die. and who knows what blake’s seen over the years in the white fang? hell, just a few weeks ago she saw a dude get crushed by part of her house and exploded at the same time. we don’t know what oscar’s life has been like but he was living with his aunt with no sign of his parents so there’s a good chance they died when he was young and he does have some of oz’s memories as well. we may not have a lot of details about qrow’s life but it’s a pretty safe bet theres been a hell of a lot of blood and death. and maria, the icon™️ whose name you keep forgetting, is an old woman so it’s unsurprising that she’d be the least rattled. whereas while weiss grew up in an abusive home, it was also pretty sheltered from the outside world and still privileged in a lot of ways. she said once that board members for her father’s company had been executed but I doubt she had to see their bodies or was close to any of them. of course people died at the battle of beacon but we don’t know if weiss ever really had to get up close with any of it. so this is probably just newer for her. I could be totally wrong but that’s my guess anyway. blake and yang seem to go one step forward, two steps back. like you said, at first yang is smiling when blake says she’ll be there. it’s after she says she’ll protect her that yang pulls away. I don’t think she wants to be protected or for blake to see her as someone who needs protecting, she wants to fight together and have each others backs. which I totally get but poor blake is trying, man. and last but absolutely not least, my man qrow. he’s definitely not having a good time at the moment, but as you said, the op made it pretty obvious he wouldn’t be. the reason his alcoholism probably didn’t really strike you is because up to this point it’s only really been treated as a gag and he’s been what I guess you’d call a “functional alcoholic”. the first time we meet him he’s drunk off his ass and when winter points that out glynda says “he’s always drunk.” he’s regularly sipping from his flask but has only ever really seemed “drunk” that first time. and even then he seemed able to flip a switch and focus up when things got serious, plus he fought winter without a problem despite having been unable to walk in a straight line a minute before. but the thing about “functional alcoholism” is that it doesn’t actually work. it may seem like it does, but it’s an illusion and always has an expiration date. at the end of the day qrow is obviously a deeply traumatized and chronically depressed individual. he’s been barely holding on for a long time and as far as I can tell, ruby, yang, tai, oz, and the mission to stop salem have been the only things keeping him going. now he feels like that mission is pointless, his most trusted friend lied to him and his support system is down to his teenage nieces who he’s supposed to be looking out for. he’s headed for rock bottom at max speed and there’s no way it’ll be pretty. im glad you noticed the animation of weiss’s understanding when ruby said they should keep that room shut cos i’ve always loved how well done it was. do you remember what whitley said when weiss asked about their mom? “she’s already drinking in the garden.” or weiss opening up to yang last volume? she talked about it starting with a glass of wine here or there and then it was a /bottle/ of wine here or there… weiss knows what it’s like to have an alcoholic in your family. she almost immediately understands ruby’s concerns.
