Brad Bird directed this one which is why it has more humor than the other three. Especially in the self aware bits. The screw up in the tech (i.e. the failed self destruct, the mask machine not working, and as you pointed out, the gloves), or the argument about having to climb the Burj Khalifa. It's like Tom's speaking for the audience like "Do I really need to top the stunts from the last movie. This is also the first time he did a live action movie.
