I think the reason for the change regarding Abby's motivation is that, a lot of people who played the game didn't like that part of it. Many felt detached from her, found her unlikable and was frustrated that they were forced to follow a character they couldn't properly relate with. That's all what I've heard though back when the game came out, I haven't played it myself, so not sure how true it was for the majority of players, but I do remember pretty loud complaints about her in that regard.

(I know it inside and out) I’ve been looking for a way to watch the show as I don’t have the right streaming for it.
