Update!

Those of you who were around almost a year ago remember that I was considering starting a new channel due to the algorithm kind of destroying the discoverability of a lot of my videos. I wound up having my editors leave more footage in movie reactions and it is definitely better than it was before, but my monthly income has gone down 25% in the last 4 months. I feel like I need to try something new or I fear this career might not be sustainable.

I plan on moving movie reactions to a new channel while continuing shows on the current channel. This will not change how you interact with my content on Patreon, as I will still link the full reaction and early reaction as I did before, but if you want to know the thinking behind this experiment, you can continue reading.

I call it an experiment because instead of making a drastic move and moving entirely to a new channel, I'm testing the waters just with movie reactions to see how this will work out. If I find that my theory is wrong, I'll just move those movie reactions back to the main channel.

YouTube's primary driving metric seems to be watch time, and my theory is that because I have around 2 years of movie reactions that clock in under 10 minutes of footage, YouTube continues to group new movie reactions under the same umbrella. They're less likely to recommend my reactions to new viewers because historically, my reactions are not good for watch time since they're shorter.

Views for some of those older movie reactions fell off a cliff in March 2021. Some movie reactions were still getting 800-1000 views per day more than a year after I published them but they suddenly dropped to around 100 a day and eventually trickled down to around 10. Videos that were still drawing in new subscribers no longer did and I've found that even among new videos, some of them show up really far down in the search results. New videos are supposed to show up pretty high in the search results while YouTube is figuring out how much to recommend them to people, but there have been videos I've published that don't even show up in the top 30. New videos also do not continue to get views like the old videos once did.

Ideally I can get a good idea of how well this is going before the end of the month, because if the results are promising, I might start Arcane on that channel as well, and perhaps continue The Dragon Prince there too. I'll make an announcement on YouTube for moving movie reactions. If this works well, I may even re-edit some of the older but more popular movie reactions to have more footage and upload those as well, but that's a very far off idea.

This all came to me within the last hour or two so I'm not fully ready for the transition just yet. Nope will come out on Patreon tomorrow. I'll link an early reaction as well and will probably start with a new channel on Friday. Unlike last year, I'm not panicking or having any anxiety over this, so... yay :)

Hope you all have a wonderful night!

I'll also add you are doing great with it. But 25 % is a HUGE decrease, and I'd be equally concerned about that!

Thanks for sympathizing! It definitely can be frustrating sometimes

I'm so sorry youtube is being so frustrating in terms of new viewership! The whole business angle is why I could not do it. in general, and respect those that do do it. A new channel might be a good idea. I know of one youtuber-explorewithindia who does a different channel for family friendly movies. I can imagine just how exhausting this all can be! :(
