One more thing lol! the line "they call me Mr. pig" said by Pumba is a reference to a movie called In the Heat of the Night. Its a really amazing film about racism and the experiences of a black detective in a small town. It is set in the south but was actually filmed Sparta, Illinois which is right by my family's ancestral and still running farm and my grandpa's friends were extras in it! I highly recommend the film! It deals with really dark subjects but its so good and a really progressive film for its time about the stark reality of race in the 60s. Starring beloved and pioneering black actor Sidney Poitier in the lead role as Mr. Tibbs (the Mr. pig reference you'll get if you see the movie)

Also, I recommend Lion King 2. Maybe it's the nostalgia talking but I genuinely love that movie and imo the soundtrack is just as poppin. I may even like the villain song better than Scar's.

I love how you appreciate how gorgeous this film is. No matter how gorgeous and advanced their modern films are there is something special about the 2D format that I will always love and just seems a bit more artistic, I cant explain it. I miss 2D Disney a lot not just for the animation style being classic but they used to tailor the styles of the backgrounds for each movie. If you go back and pay close attention you'll notice the art style of Mulan's scenery is entirely different from that in Hercules and way different from that in Sleeping Beauty, etc. One of my favorite things as a kid was when DVD's had those special bonus features, every Disney movie had one where it talked about art direction and what inspired the looks of the characters and the world and that's what made me want to be an animator!

That's a fair reading on it! I'm very much a "save the best for last" kinda person so we'll see :P

I don't really think Hakuna Matata is "the wrong message", and just think it was the right message for Simba at that moment in his life. Of course he eventually has to deal with his past, responsibilities and trauma; but when he meets Timon and Pumbaa he's just a scared abandoned child and I'd say just relaxing and having fun with friends was exactly what he needed. In regards to the sequels: 1 1/2 is fun but nothing special; while 2, while having the unavoidable flaws that come from it being a direct-to-video release, has some really cool stuff and pretty good songs (including a fantastic one that is also in The Lion King Broadway musical). As for the order, I don't think it really matters, but I'll say watch 2 first just because I'm more eager to see that reaction. :P

A great and timeless classic :)
