It's frankly shocking how many actors came from Jon Stewart's The Daily Show! Steve Carrell, Ed Helms, and Olivia Munn were all there

2023-03-20 13:57:50 +0000 UTCJon Stewart is the OG, I believe John Oliver had his start as a correspondent on the Daily Show back when Jon was the host. I think that's how Colbert got his start as well! He is great!

2023-03-14 12:59:35 +0000 UTCHow did I just see you watch Last Week Tonight?? John Oliver is like the most leftist mainstream TV host and I love him and his show! If I ever need an issue explained from a leftist perspective I go to the LWT youtube channel first.

2023-03-13 23:50:12 +0000 UTCI'm very sorry for you having such a terrible experience with your state's welfare system. I work in child support enforcement in my state, and we have a provision in our procedures to accommodate a custodial parent's fear of naming the other parent, which prevents welfare agencies from denying aid. I'm flabbergasted that you weren't given that opportunity, because it is a federal mandate, individual states are not supposed to have their own rules on that regard.

2023-03-13 21:02:50 +0000 UTCI know I often overshare stories on these posts, but I can't let this one go by. My son was born in 2007, I graduated college in 2008 with a degree in Anthropology. I wanted to be a lawyer, but I knew I'd have no luck on my own with an infant in law school (either correctly or incorrectly, I'll never know) so I went to graduate school to be a teacher because there were few other options for a single mother with a bachelor's degree and no work experience in 2008. I applied for TANF and WIC and SNAP and was found ineligible for all but WIC because I refused to name my child's father. I pointed out that, legally, he didn't have one because I was unmarried and there was no second name on my child's birth certificate. We also ran an ad in the paper (on the advice of my lawyer uncle) for two weeks after my son was born which would further nullify any future claim of parental rights for my ex. The representative in the welfare office tried anything to get me to say his name so that "they could help me" despite my telling them that he was not in the picture. That he'd hit me while pregnant. That he'd tried to spike my drinks to cause an abortion against my wishes (why he thought gin would do that, or that I'd not notice I was drinking alcohol, idk). And that I knew if he was approached for child support I'd have to also allow visitation, which was unsafe for my child... They were relentless and I left with nothing except some formula (I was breastfeeding, as I told the representative) and advice to "come back if I wanted to talk some more." The current system is about shame and has nothing to do with people who are actually trying to get the temporary help they need. I eventually graduated (with a LOT of help from friends and family - more than they could afford to give) and got a great job and I'm a small business owner with my husband now...no f-ing thanks to the state welfare office. I can remember times when all I had in the house was a can of soup...whatever was on sale for less than $1 and had the most vegetables and meat in it...I'd drink the broth and give the vegetables and meat to my son. It's NOT healthy, but we both lived.
