I played D&D in those heady 1980's. To quote Douglas Adams, "In those days spirits were brave, the stakes were high, men were real men, women were real women and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri.” I was tickled to see some classic dungeon dwellers that us old school campaigners were so familiar with - Gelatinous Cubes, Mimics, Owl-bears and Chimeras (and, I think, a half-ogre in the prison cell?).
