I learned recently the actress who played the blond woman, Heloise, recently made a bid public stand against director Roman Polanski! He is an awful pedo creep who still gets praise in America and France and she stood against him! She inspired a few other people to walk out as well.

Just watched your reaction, and loved it. I really think this movie also wins a lot on rewatch, theres a lot of symbolism and forshadowing you can catch when you know what's to come

Glad you loved this movie so much! It definitely does sound very difficult to pain things from memory. And thanks for the recommendations! :)

Something similar to this is a movie called the girl king, it is also a historical queer movie and from what I remember it is fantastic. I watched this movie around the same time as I watched a girl king but I never did finish this one till now. I glad I got to watch it with you!

Also if you are into the eurydice and orpheus myth, I highly recommend the Broadway musical Hadestown! Not really to react to as you can only find the soundtrack online, but just to listen to! And maybe check out in person if it comes to your town!

I love this movie! I love historical fiction and of course any queer storytelling. I am a classically trained painter myself, though an animator now. The idea of having to paint someone without their knowing, in a time when you couldn’t sneak pics of them for reference, is so interesting and hard to me. The old masters didn’t even draw portraits from memory like that haha especially after an hour of observations. I don’t get much chance to paint portraits from life, it’s difficult enough when someone is sittings in front of you lol. I will say I think they had an actual painter do the hand focused shots of drawing and painting, it reminded me of how my professors taught me to move my hands while I drew and painted! I love the story between the two main characters but I also love the bind all three girls made during the movie. They weren’t just developing a romantic relationship, they were making friendships as well. It’s about the bond between women as much as it was about queer love! If you want more in this vein, I have some recs to put on your list! (Just a warning, they will also make you cry. I have yet to find a historical queer romance that is happy) This movie does remind me of the music video for Tenny (159cm) which is a Kpop MV. It does have a happy ending. Ammonite, set in 1840’s England; The Handmaiden, set during Japanese colonization of South Korea, I think the 1930’s; Carol 1952 America; The Favorite, late 1600’s England during Queen Anne’s rule. The last one is more of a comedy but the first three are dramas that reconcile the time period and queer relations and I love all of them. Definitely R rated, all really worth watching.
