For me, it wasn't that it was unbelievable. It was that the Ark of the Covenant, the Sankara Stones, and the Holy Grail were more mystical, so the whole alien thing felt tonally out of place. But, eventually, I realized that the franchise is more about the historical/archeological side than the mystical.
