I think the best thing about many of the X-Men stories I love is that the characters never do a complete U-turn. (I’m not saying those kinds of stories don’t exist — I’m saying the ones I like are the other kind.) Magneto should never seem ‘redeemed,’ because he’s the embodiment of trauma. He can’t simply heal from that trauma, become reasonable, or recognize the flaws in his crusade — because that would make him a useless character. In the same way, Cyclops can’t stop thinking about how to save the world as if the entire burden rests solely on his shoulders. And when he becomes ‘evil’ and kills Xavier, you see laid bare that the heart of his character isn’t being the good guy or the leader, but the trauma that drives him not to truly trust anyone, and to be arrogantly convinced he’s the only one who knows what to do.
