The Clave is very old fashioned (for lack of a better word) they haven't changed anything in many many years. The circle was originally formed to try and change that, but Valentine took it way to far. Alec parents always drilled into his head that he had to follow all the rules (trying to be in good graces with the Clave at all times) When he found out they were in the Circle, Alec felt betrayed by the two people he felt never broke the rules themselves. It's his way of trying to better them now. He is hurt and scared of himself (deep down he knows he has his own issues).
