26 - Rescue

This time it was true, Remy and I were breathing heavily because we were really tired. Looking around, I had to control myself countless times so I couldn't throw up with the bloody scene that was in front of me. At least thirty men were lying on the ground, some moaning, while others did not even breathe anymore, but I had no regrets at all. These people did tests with human beings, with children, that was the least they deserved.

Speaking of which, I left Remy on this floor looking for something while I went up again looking for why we came here.

And when I went up just one floor, I could hear some childish cries behind the door. Without thinking twice I broke the door that locked the children without even checking if it was unlocked and when I entered I saw something that made my heart squeeze and the anger return to me, reinforcing the idea that what I did was not wrong.

My red eyes made it possible for me to see at least 20 children in the dark room trapped inside a cage like animals while a horrible smell penetrated my nose, probably as a result of Scientists Guild's obvious neglect of basic sanitation for these poor children.

When I entered the room, I noticed that the crying stopped, and by my red vision, I saw the fear and despair that these poor children felt when looking at me. Remy said that my red eyes were a little Badass and scary at the same time, but I doubt that's the main reason that caused these children fear.

"It's okay, guys, Gambit and I beat the bad men. We came here to help you, just let me break this grate..." I said as I pushed the railing a little bit that locked these poor victims up and blew the lock that kept them from getting out. "Okay, now you're free." I said trying my best to make a warm smile despite the situation.

But contrary to what I expected, none of the children moved. All 20 of them were hugged at the bottom of the cage trying to transmit a sense of protection to each other, seeing this only made me feel even worse, since the psychological make-up of these poor children suffered serious trauma, which must be treated with due care.

"It's okay, guys, look at me, tell me who my clothes look like?" I said as I stretched out and tried to use the dim lighting to show the color pattern of my clothes.

Looking at this, I saw that some children were a little less afraid, until a little boy said in a very low voice, but due to the silence that was in place and my super hearing I could hear clearly. "Captain America."

"Yes! You hit the fly! I'm a hero too, just like Captain America. And I came here today to save you. What's your name?" I asked the little boy.

"Billy." He answered with a voice still shy, but several times less than the first time.

"Okay, Billy, you look very smart. How about we call the police so he can call his mother here?" I asked as I walked in the cage of poor children and knelt in front of them.

"I want that..." He said as his eyes began to get wet and I could notice his voice getting wetter and wetter, causing my heart to squeeze more and more.

"All right, everybody, I'm gonna take you to the police and return everybody to your parents. Who wants to come home?" I asked as I watched everyone raise their hands still a little scared, but now with a hopeful look on their face. "Okay, everybody, I'll help you, but let's make a deal. Come here, Billy." I said as I extended my hand to him.

Holding on to the cry to look strong, Billy came from wandering still with a little fear towards me and held my hand with his little hand and stared at my eyes that still glowed red with curiosity. "All right, now just like I held Billy's hand, I want each of you to hold someone's hand, okay? So no one gets left behind." Everyone did what I asked, making a small line of children who at the end looked at me with curiosity and expectation.

Seeing this, I got up off the ground slowly so as not to scare anyone and started walking slowly towards the door. As we were about to leave, Remy appeared as he held a glass bottle the size of a soccer ball filled with a strange red liquid in his hand and stared at me as he watched me leave the dark room with several children.

When he showed up, I felt Billy's grip on my hand getting tighter, probably from the fear he was now feeling for Remy, but I held on tight to give him security and told Remy. "Gambit, I'm taking them to the surface, finish this fast, our time is running out."

Remy nodded positively and waited on the stairs as I walked out of there with the children still holding a line.

Avoiding the places where there were dead people, I finally managed to get to the exit with the children who have now cried again, but this time with huge smiles on their happy faces for being able to leave again and imagine their mother arriving and taking them home.

As I left the building, I took a pair of sunglasses that I had hidden in my jacket and was happy to see that it was not broken. When I put it on my face, I took a deep breath to deactivate my red vision and noticed with my super hearing someone on the 4th floor of the front building calling the police because I had left this building with several children just after several explosions happened.

"All right, guys, the police are coming. When she gets here I won't be able to be with you, but I want everyone to be together, okay? Do not leave." I said with a smile.

"You really can't stay here with us, superhero?" Billy asked with a worried voice.

"Don't worry Billy, if you need us, you can be sure we'll do our best to help again, all right?" I answered with a smile and an understanding fist to him, which with a little laugh he hit back lightly.

When I heard the first siren, an explosion came from inside the building we were in and Remy ran out of there. Knowing it was our time, I said goodbye to the kids and started running to a nearby alley until Billy yelled at me. "What's your name, hero?"

Listening, I turned around and simply pointed to the big "S" on my chest and turned around as I ran back, since I didn't know what my superhero name would be yet.
