WYSIWYG vs Proxying in 40K - Discussion Corner

I totally would have let you use that as a proxy. I would find it amusing in a casual game. But only if you planned on getting a real one eventually and you just wanted to try it out. Not if you would only be using that going forward.

If a unit can take an option but gw doesn't include it in the kit then I think proxying like that is ok, even in tournaments.

It seems to me that if the bits and bobs are available for a conversion then players should be modeling with them and no proxies should be allowed. But if it's something that isn't available to be purchased than some kind of accommodation could be allowed for. It would be nice if GW offered more upgrade kits.

Funniest proxy I've done was a drop pod I made with full dropping doors and all out of legos. Exact size and all but during a casual game with friends I was denied use of said creation.

And when are they going to start selling off decal sheets for the also-ran chapters that have been around for decades now?

I just wonder where the line is drawn. E.g. do I need to model my pistol choices? Holsters? Can I please proxy meltas for flamers until GW makes some without Blood Angel logos? What about models where their kits don't ship with all of their available options and never have.. DEATHWATCH. It would be one thing if GW sold upgrade or parts kits for everything, but we're lucky to get a handful of shoulder pads, heads and some key-fobs. Maybe when GW better supports WYSIWYG I'll care more about it -- until then this bolter is whatever bolter I say it is.

I like to keep this idea simple. In casual gameplay if its within the point parameters then I'm fine. However, in a competitive setting the idea of proxy is less than ideal. Essentially if proxies are allowed then an army who is limited in its doctrine, example Tyranids with limited shooting capability, will be at an immediate disadvantage when their opponent can equip a different load out to counter. I'm all for having fun but if you want more flexibility in your army, learn to magnetize.
