Squad Size in 9th Edition

Thought I'd make an update of some thoughts on unit size in the new edition!

Hey dude, send me a message!

Hey dude hope you get back to work soon, times are hard, hang in there and don’t let things get you down. X

And good shout, definitely a good incentive to add a few more warm bodies to a unit with a powerful upgrade!

Really sorry to hear about your job, I totally understand and thanks for everything so far :)

Auspex Tactics

Just started collecting and this helps me understand things!!

Sadly, I will have to withdraw my patronage for now due to loss of employment, but I don't want you to think I have unsub'd due to a lack of quality content! Thanks for the access. :)One departing observation - you appear to have missed out one value of larger squads - ablative wounds for specialists. e.g. a four weapon Space Marine devastator squad.

Excellent topic

For those marine units that have not got the 2 wound bump, such as CSM and Grey Knights, the 5-man squad is just not survivable under the 9th edition rules. I'm playing Grey Knights in Crusade and I have noticed that the 5-man Strike Squad can easily be shot off objectives due to only have 5 wounds. Until they get the 2-wound bump, you should consider the larger OpSec squads.

The sergeant also gives a slight melee boost (+1 attack on his profile and can take a free chainsword for another extra attack and a slightly better profile, or pay for power weapons). Needing to save space on troop slots isn't likely to be a frequent problem, if anything you'll often want to fill them out cheaper! But yes, the Rapid Fire stratagem does work better on a 10 man squad.

Ste Saunders

I think it depends on what you're wanting to do with them. If you're needing to save space on troop slots then sure. The sergeant doesn't do too much for regular intercessors besides the higher leadership right? And starting them off as 1 squad of 10 means you can get more potent use from stratagems.

Justin Burton

So is it incorrect to take 10 intercessors and split them into 2 5man squads?

Mark Wheat

I'm curious to see if there is a pendulum swing where people take small squads leading to fewer blast weapons being fielded and then there is an explosion of larger overwhelming squads for a short amount of time before blast shrinks them down etc.

I was just thinking "man, I need some high quality 40k video now" [Enter Auspex Tactics patreon notification]
