Should 40K Ditch the D6?

Let's talk about the often discussed possibility of 40K moving to another system of dice...

Comments

Im a big fan of d10's personally. Adamantly, d12s do roll better and have slightly more numerical possibility, but I think their almost their on a d6 honestly, 10 would be plenty to make different units distinct without invalidating buffs. I feel like a d12 based game would probably necessitate stacking buffs to keep up.

Tyler Kemp

The main Downside is that people would need to collect more varieties of dice but GW would definitely make some Dice Kits

GigaMaxon

I quite like a D12 system, allows for more fine-tuning with ballistic and weapon skill as well as the strength of various weapons while not being too far from the current system so that people could understand it

calvin mckinney

I need more 20D dice for my cadian shock troop.... I prefer 6D dice would be easy to get and count

GOH WEI HAI

No. While they'd obviously manufacture lots of bulk packs of whatever new dice, the D6's really aren't the root of the problem. Yeah, there's less granularity, but this can be countered by simply rolling more dice. More rolls of lower sided dice = fewer rolls of higher sided dice for variability.

Derrick Whittet

Nah, D6s look and feel nice and there are a million improvements they could make to the rules without needing to get into the dice. I played By Fire and Sword which is a great game, utilizing d10s, and it's cool but you definitely get the feeling that your "reliable" units are a lot less reliable when there's still like a 30-40% chance you fail everything, and by contrast the old Flames of War still used d6s but was a much better ruleset and capable of conveying a lot of variation among army lists even when every units stats were split into just conscript, trained and veteran for proficiency, reluctant, confident, and fearless for morale, and some numbers attached to vehicle armor, saves, and weapon armor penetration.

Joseph Trueblood

I'd be fine with any dice to be honest. My biggest concern though is having to buy them. Currently you can get big sets of d6 dice from Chessex and other companies in almost any colors/patterns you like. They sell them in "bricks" for easy storage/manufacturing/logistics. If GW switched to any other dice/shape it would not be as easy for manufacturers and we would all have to buy a LOT of expensive one-off dice. With the amount of dice thrown around in 40k, that would be super pricy very quickly, unless more dice manufacturers started selling sets of only d10/d12/Dwhatever. World of Darkness uses d10s. I'd be curious to see data on how that impacts the player base (if at all).

Ian P Riutta

Only dice that would expand the range of throws without ruining whole system is d12. It gives access to d2, d3, d4, d6 and d12 throws on one dice, lets game designers fine tune modifiers, and rolls way better than 6, 8 or even 10 on the table.

Aleksander Kapica

Realistically it would be a huge switch for GW to move away from D6. The company's founders strongly believed in sticking to D6 as they are more democratic (almost everyone has a D6 somewhere in their house). That argument made a lot of sense in the 1980s but not really now, when anyone can order a load of polyhedral dice from the internet for a lot less than GW will sell you 20 faction-specific D6! If there was going to be a change, I'd suggest that D12 are optimal for two reasons: they roll a lot better than D6, D8, or D10, especially on uneven surfaces; and a D12 can also be used as a D3, D4, or D6 in the same way that a D6 can be a D3. At the moment GW's solution is to adjust the number and power of attacks to make up for the lack of granularity. It would boil down to whether better granularity and fewer dice rolls is more satisfying than throwing down dozens of dice when your hammer unit gets stuck into a juicy target!

Nicholas Harmer

I'd be up for moving to D10's, but can you imagine the absolute SHITSHOW that would be the FB comments sections. It would more than likely require an edition change as well as new codexes so you would have people complaining that there hasn't been long enough between editions, not like "the old days". If it needs an edition change then people will complain about FOMO as they won't want to buy the new box but they need the new everything in it. The amount of D10's people might need to buy would be an issue as well. Not just horde armies but also elite armies like BA that can stack bonus attacks. The drama would be glorious to watch.

To me the game and the lore are two different things. In the game there's no reason why a X should or shouldn't be as good or powerful as Y. And in lore, sure, there are some things different. But just try to bring a Necron Tachyon Arrow (could kill a Titan in a book) with that power level into the game. Or should a D6 be not enough to kill a Titan in a book? So I'm fine how the game uses D6. There's no real problem if you don't compare game play with lore or lore with the game stats.

Jan Baucke

Expand to a D12 or D20 system for most things (accuracy, wounding, armor, etc) and keep D6's for things like advance, charge, and the like.

Galaxy Hunter

Not ditch them but maybe just add d10s.

Zeke

I really like the basic rules of warzone resurrection, units etc in that game are unbalanced but core rules are good and easy

Vlas

The patching and re-balancing would be UUUUgly and likely take them at least an edition to get even close to right. 2+ years of going through late 8th and early 9th again.... I don't see the gains being worth the losses. They should probably start with streaming the current product offerings... do we need 12 different types of bolters?

Geoffrey Denight

Oh god yes yes a thousand times yes! This is my number one hope for 10th. Can’t see it happen but a man can dream.

Stephen Allen

I think using different die for different units doing different things is a good alternative too. So a Knight save is the same and AP is the same, but they roll on a higher dice (say a d12). Of course any change isn't going to go down well, because people default to hating change. But I think it would make a huge difference and way better imo.

Leo Starrs-Cunningham

Personally i have no problem with D6, but i think it would give the game a better flavour if we could use other dices. Just like he explained in the video. In the end, i am pro change.

Christoph Bloch

Sorry for the double-post, but... to be honest, using d6s is more of an accessibility sort of thing and to make getting into the game as easy as possible. However, I feel like getting into the game has a lot more avenues and appeals than just making it easy now. There are loads of different ways people get into the game rather than the ease, so at this point, changing the dice system wouldn't be too terribly hard, I think.

Curtis Thompson

I would be up for at least play-testing changes with dice.

Curtis Thompson

I'm all for a change. My biggest issue with the game is how it doesn't play like the lore. My favorite game is Kill Team, and as much as I love it, 6 Space Marines (let alone 4 Custodes) should never lose to 10-14 Human Guardsmen, Tau, etc.

John King Hickey

Too right

Ed Boyer

They could change the dice. Or they could change the rules. I say go back to the old way were both BS and WS were numbered like S and T (1 to 10 and possibly higher). In both cases we would treat similar to the S vs T on weapons. So you would compare your WS to your opponent's. Makes sense as your opponent is probably trying to parry your attacks. That means if the WSs are the same, it hits on a 4+. For ballistic skills, I say add a new attribute called stealth. We already have things that make our units "stealthy" or hidden so make it a separate attribute that can be manipulated. That means smaller units have a bonus and larger units would have penalty (similar to blast rules). Smaller models like guardsman would have a natural better stealth, while things like my *gulp* Tau Riptide and tanks would have a low stealth because, lets face it they are an easy target to spot and hit. Then the specialized units like scouts and my Tau Pathfinders would have high stealth because that's what they are specialized in. If my stealth is higher than your BS, its a 5+ to hit, if my stealth is twice as much, well good luck rolling that 6. Yes we still have the same probability of the D6 but we now have more variables that dictate what the roll is and strategies in playing the game. A stealthy army is now very viable playing style (looking at you Raven Guard). It also helps with balancing because things that have high toughness probably have low stealth. Yes the Space Marines are going it hit most things on a 3+ but now those guardsman can also hit something on a 3+... if it is a tank.... ten feet away... stopped... and painted yellow.... and the commissioner is threating to kill them... Still won't mean they can damage it but they can at least now die knowing they hit it.

Matthew M.

The only problem with going with a die higher than 6 is that you will have to learn a lot more numbers for your units and abilities. Meaning there will be a lot more errors in games. Sometimes the KISS principle is best (Keep It Simple Stupid).

RICHARD

Personally it wouldn't matter to me if they end up changing the type of dice used. I have a surplus of d8s, d10s, d12s and d20s

Uril Stormwolf

Yes. There isn't even any question about it. We have tonnes of reroll and add this to that rules that would be unnecessary if they just moved away from the D6. On a D12 there could be actual meaningful difference between a Space Marine, an Eldar, a Guardsmen and an Ork. Same with armour. But it's not likely to happen outside of side games like Apocalypse (far better ruleset than current 40k) and Adeptus Titanicus.

Sören the German (Trembich Moving Moments)

I like the idea of using other dice. A problem I foresee is players accidentally bumping the dice and changing the results. It happens occasionally with a D6, but the more sides, the les angle need to change the result as you gather your dice.

SykoSponge

You forgot farkel lol

Ed Boyer

i like D6 systems and the dice have a more use outside of the game. Wanna play some liars dice, Yatzee or risk grab some D6's.

Jared Reid

Too used to the D6..although I do actually have a couple of weird quirks. 1. I bought a few D3s off eBay because something bugs me about the half the number and round up thing. I really love using it, even if it is odd. 2. All my D6s I now choose to use numeral versions like a D10 or D20, i.e. not dots. I just find reading 1-6 in numerals much easier. I just find it easier to work things out more quickly.

Luke Williams

I say no. I've got a lot of fancy D6's that wouldn't get the use, if it were not for 40K. By the way the new intro is sweet.

Sean Colburn

Short answer: No Long answer: Nooooooooooooooooo
