Paint for Strong Rules in Warhammer 40K?

Discussing where painted models and winning games overlap in Warhammer 40K!

Comments

I appreciate WYSIWYG assembly and paint. That takes dedication and time. And when someone puts the extra time in, I respect them for it. That said, 40k is a time-intensive and relatively costly hobby already. I don't think it's good for us as a community to make it harder to play. And, quite frankly, I don't care if your Marines are blue or green or whatever. As long as they're vaguely appropriate-looking, let's go.

Matt

Da back of moi rokkit iz red to make da rikkit go fasta, da tip iz yellow to make it more Boooom... tho my orkz iz black cuz goffs iz da best orkz

The only time I would ever be bothered about paint schemes is if someone played a marine soup army with multiple chapters at the same time, even then just make sure they are different colours not necessarily the lore accurate colours

Jacob Page

Wait so what color you paint your minis actually matters? So having all of my intercessor units painted for death watch but generally running black Templars would be a no-go in a professional tournament?

I think the tendency for people to discover that their army is an Iron Hands successor speaks volumes about the lack of balance. Players shouldnt have to build an entire new army just to use the rules that are competitive, I just ask that a player proxying keep me informed and remind me if I'm looking at something different than the rules it's running under.

Samantha

I painted my orks with a rainbow color scheme because 1) my Proud Boyz wearing rainbows is a quiet thumb in the eye of the douchey protofascist group here in the US, 2) the lore is fun and so is the paint scheme (though it can be annoying sometimes), and 3) it doesn't lock me in to one kultur, though I don't abuse it.

gabriel smith

Not gonna lie, if they made it where orks can make other factions gain bonuses from certain paint colors, that would be pretty funny.

As an ork player I wish painting had more of an affect on rules. I paint my vehicle's rims red to insinuate the idea that it's directly affecting the wheels specifically and I think it'd be cool if other colors had other effects. Like since purple is "sneaky" I think it'd be cool if that gave units the benefit of light cover. Or one color increases armor save and another allows you to re roll missed hits for blast weapons, I don't remember what they believe each color does but I'm sure you'll get the gist. I don't like seeing unpainted armies personally, it just looks incomplete to me. It's one thing if it's apparent they're just taking their time but entire unpainted armies are an eye sore to me.

Galen DeVoe II

I just paint my army cos I like the lore of the chapter (White Scars) and I dont care that the rules arent the best. The erule of cool! And yes I field dreads in my army.

Vlas

I don't expect anyone to paint up their armies, as long as it's made clear what is what and the proxies aren't aggregious

Tyler Kemp

You do you, boo.

I have an army I paint in my own custom colors, but several of them have modified Salamanders iconography, some modified Space Wolves, and a few other things, but all have a similar animal head look. 'Lore' wise, I lean them more towards being a Salamanders successor, but they're big into heavy armor, so I might play them with Iron Hands rules, or any other unit on a whim. One thing to keep in mind is a lot of the rules are very specific and structured for the purposes of the game itself, and not to match lore. For example, there's no reason a Primaris marine can't get into a Rhino, yet the rules will tell you no. That doesn't mean you couldn't have a chapter that includes Primaris, but you only have Rhinos and Land Raiders for transports. Sure, in game they couldn't ride one into battle, but that doesn't mean in the lore half your army has to go on foot or something. Likewise, different squads in a given chapter may have tactics that vary a bit from the rest of them, so it would be logical that perhaps their rules mimic another chapter entirely. Such as your armor-heavy squad actually behaves like Iron Hands, tactically speaking, even though they're in the Imperial Fists. Warhammer was designed specifically to be very flexible, thematically and lore wise. The rules and specified lore are simply the average or norm; they are not exclusive. As another example, there's many patterns of Land Raiders, even though a few are spoken of. That doesn't mean you can't make a custom model and call it a Typhoon-Pattern Land Raider. In general, gamers need to let people have fun in their own way and not get so caught up on being sticklers on rules.

Lol.... I see what I did there. But as an example, because I don't field heavy weapons teams, using the models as line infantry. They are all down on one knee and have the lower profile. Or the old Catachan sniper lying down in the prone position. Convert up 200 of them boys and let someone try to draw line of sight.

Geoffrey Denight

The wall on the base is part of the base, so part of the model, not terrain. The loss of height would be a small advantage, if the wall was also short. But you are right, LOS Rules are a bit stupid, if simple

Gerald Strout

Casually I play against more gray plastic than anything, so I'm just glad to play anything painted. Competitively, if you have to have paint and WYSIWYG war gear, then you should require WYSIWYG paint too.

Adam

Im gonna paint my marines brown and run them as ultramarines, see what you think about that

pepi dimi

As an Iron Hands player who paints my models as codex accurate, I have mixed feelings on this. I'm often unimpressed when I see an obvious Blood Angels army roll up with IH rules, I think because some part of me feels like I "earned" the right to my currently overpowered rules by playing an obscure chapter that doesn't usually get the same amount of love as others. I realize this his isn't really reasonable, but it feels odd to see someone pivot away from their choice of chapter so quickly because I personally wouldn't. I understand wanting to play your models as a better army though, I just value the narrative of my army higher than its competitive appeal.

Elry

I paint in a homebrew scheme to run literally anything I want because I don't always want to be clobbered. And yet I don't always want to play only the strongest faction. I'm still miffed some by the 10 points for painted armies because I primarily paint to a high standard only in my life. I don't have time to play often. And I don't want to buy an expensive kit just to make it base colors and bland. But due to painting mostly HQ models and vehicles, since you know they have the most variety, I don't have full army lists made up and ready to go at a moment's notice.

Christian Miller

The point about painting non-canon is exactly how I feel right now. I really like White Scars colors and lore but GW treats them like 2nd class chapter. One character that doesn't even have a bike. Because of that I'm considering painting my army as Blood Angels - my 2nd favourite chapter. But then I read that for some tournaments I may end up locked as BA. So going "succesor" seems like the only "safe" option.

Mikołaj Zalewski

IDK to me 40K is just a game with miniature toy soldiers. If you're such a sweaty try hard that you need to "min-max" and always run what's "best in slot" that I don't want to play you regardless of how your army's painted 🤷

Chris Merrell

I mean In the end a space marine is a space marine, the models are the same just different colors. But as long as they use the right models and it's clear what's what I think it's fine, it would be a bit wierd in a tournament but I'd still roll with it.

Coppor Top

I feel like the painted rules are fine. It is a bit of a letdown when you are playing against a grey blob that also makes it more difficult to identify which units are which

Gree s

I feel like in casual games if someone wants to run their green Salamanders as White Scars or something because they want to test out their rules then that's fine. If I'm at a tournament and some guy deploys his army of blue Ultramarines onto the table and tells me they're Iron Hands - especially if they've just had a big buff - then it's a bit on the nose.

Strigon_Actual

With marines (both chaos and loyalist) I like to find a corner of the lore that speaks to me and let that inform my hobby choices. The lore is really what elevates 40k above it's contemporaries for me, otherwise you're stuck playing a clunky bloated wargame. I'll accept whatever rules come with those choices even as I seethe about GW not servicing "my" faction.

Paul Wilson

playing your ultras as another chapter to test things out is perfectly fine, especially in casual. and as you say using a custome scheme and just saying there a succesor chapter with the "Inheritors of the Primarch" rule lets you play anything anytime.

DHYohko

Are you saying modeling all my minies ducking behind a wall instead of standing on a high rock with my sword raised high gives me an unfair advantage... or does it mean the current rule for how we draw lines of sight are stoopid, if simple.

Geoffrey Denight

Why I prefer custom color schemes.... of course with IG now it doesn't matter as long as some git doesn't complain that I didn't go out and purchase 300 new Krieg models

Geoffrey Denight

I PAINTS MOI KOMMANDOS PURHPLE SO DAT DA STHEWPID UMIES CANT DRAWR DERE' ZOGGIN LINE O' SOIGHT, CANT SHOOT WHAT YA DONT SEE YA GIT
