Fate/Stay Night UBW - Season 2 Episode 7

THEY DON'T LOOK ALIKE!!!

Comments

Archer and Shirou look different because in his time as a hero of Justice and being part of the Counter Force, he would use Strengthening Magecraft on his own body. The constant usage darkened his skin and bleached his hair. At least that is one explanation that we get in one timeline. Cause there are other servants that are Guardians like him who have the same complexion and hair color

TheBelieveit1

Yes you are absolutely right. I didn't stress enough that Archer indeed came from a different timeline, which is similar to Saber's route. On a side note, if I remember correctly, in Realta Nua although it didn't specifically say why she remembered previous wars, it explained thoroughly her life story including how she ascended to the Thrones etc. So it was strongly implied these were the reasons without needing extra materials? Please let me know if I am hallucinating.

Clark Huang

I'd like to add a small comment since Cryptic expressed some confusion (and this is only explained in extra materials, so it's not a spoiler for either UBW or F/Z). Saber, in this case, is a special exception to the "they never remember" rule, due to how she ascended to the Throne of Heroes and was summoned in the 4th and 5th holy grail wars in Fuyuki; so she does remember the events that happened 10 years before this war. Although what Clark said is correct, she can only remember *this timeline*, and since Archer is from a separate timeline (Rin didn't summon him in that one, and had a different Servant), she wouldn't have memories from that, as it was an alternate version of her experiencing them. I can go into more detail if you want about why Saber and Archer are special cases able to remember previous summonings (since, again, it's not explained directly in the show), but I won't bore you with it right out of the gate. πŸ˜…

Hey Quasit! I'm so glad you're enjoying these and it's pretty cool that I have someone all the way from Scotland supporting me ❀️! Gotta love how fate unites people from all over the world. As for Archer, this guy has to be one of the most interesting MCs I have ever seen. The fact that they are the same person (Shirou & Archer) yet the anime doesn't tell you that for an entire season and a half is just genius. I hope they have major plot twists like this in their other series like zero, the movies, Babylonia, and so on

CrypticBoss

Hey, new patron here! Got into your Fate reactions on YouTube and I've really been enjoying these UBW ones (partly because it lets me vicariously watch it again for the first time, ngl πŸ˜…). I've got a pretty in-depth knowledge of Fate franchise lore, so if there are any questions, I'll see if I can't help, avoiding spoilers ofc. On that note, one thing regarding Heroic Spirits remembering previous incarnations (i.e. times they've been summoned): *generally* no, but it's a rule with a good few exceptions. Usually they don't remember anything but what happened during their own life (which is why Archer knows stuff - Servant identities, etc. - from his own life as Shirou), but sometimes it can be affected by the way they're summoned, or sometimes they'll have something so monumental/impactful happen to them that it gets permanently "recorded", so to speak. (FGO goes into some of that more, but again, spoilers πŸ˜…) Anyway, long rambling comment over. Lots of love from Scotland, and really looking forward to the next episode!

CuriousQuasit

That's very sweet of you and I bet I'll have more questions as I watch more so stay tuned :D

CrypticBoss

No problem man. Always loved your reaction and thanks for reading and responding to this essay. Happy to answer any more questions if needed.

Clark Huang

I have to say, the way you just explained it and put it all together in such a short and concise manner is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for taking your time to enlighten me and comments like these literally make me love this series even more. W Clark

CrypticBoss

Yes she participated in F/Z. What I meant was for Saber this is her first time meeting Shirou. But for Archer, who lived through his own holy grail war with Saber as Shirou in his timeline before his death, will definitely remember Saber. Although not 100% accurate, think of someone who time-travelled back with all his existing memories to relive his past and change it. For him, it's the second time, but for everyone else, it is the first time.

Clark Huang

This is sabers first war?? I thought she was in Fate Zero as well which technically came before UBW πŸ€”

CrypticBoss

That's right, but for Archer the holy grail war experience was just his life experience before he died. So naturally he would remember that like any other servant. Alternatively, from Saber's perspective, this is her FIRST and only fifth grail war with Shirou. That's precisely why Saber has no recollection of Archer or Shirou but Archer does.

Clark Huang

Wait but I was told a while ago that servants don't remember anything from each Holy Grail War except for Saber (?) cuz she's like the only servant who's the exact "same" in most fate series. Also, does Saber not remember Archer then from previous wars?

CrypticBoss

Actually, just to write a bit about "Archer knowing everyone", he does. This is able to explain all of his "weird" actions before. To list a few in the episodes (more in the visual novel): He knows Saber and her identity, that's why he was surprised and was almost taken down by Saber on the first night (because from his perspective he had fought with Saber). Had Shirou not used a command spell he would be severely injured. He also teased Saber after Rider's school incident, which Rin later recalled on the last episode of S1. He also named Saber "King of Knights" last episode, when literally no one should have known her true name yet. Besides Saber, he was able to name Lancer, Caster and Berserker practically out of nowhere. He paid extra attention to Taiga after she was rescued home, naturally due to the bond between them. He talked to Kuzuki because he said he was interested in Kuzuki and wished he had known him better. Hopefully this helps. One of the reasons FSN is great is the sheer amount of foreshadowing dropped through the plot and how carefully they were planted so that it was obvious enough but didn't look too odd or forced. e.g. It was mentioned many times at the beginning that Shirou was really good at Archery and used to be at the school's Archery club.

Clark Huang

Nah I get ya, when I read the original Visual Novel I definitely questioned my thought process cause they look so different. FGO does have some character art and costumes that does kind of have a middle point that makes that bridge between the two looks make more sense.

Jarm957

Now that I know who they both are, I can kinda see the similarity but getting tanned and especially white hair from red was a big throw off for me. I actually had a theory they were the same person but I immediately brushed it off cuz I thought there's just no way they look way too different 🀣

CrypticBoss

Yeah them looking different was supposed to throw the audience off, and it can feel wtf, but if his hair is down and he stops glaring Archer does look like Shirou, ya know if he had a tan and grey hair. Also not sure if you got it explained later but Archer is from a timeline where things happened differently, in his timeline he never confronted his Archer during the Holy Grail war.
