Fate/Stay Night UBW - Season 2 Episode 8

I AM THE BONE OF MY SWORD x2???

Comments

So funny thing about Lancer in this. His death here and his routine deaths in every route and in spin off material, even when treated as a joke has basis in his legend. Cu Chulainn fought an army solo, but the stipulation was that he'd fight every enemy one v one. Now the leader of the opposing army, Queen Medb, did agree at first thinking that while it may slow her progress a bit, he'd never win fully. But as it dragged on and he kept winning easily, she got so frustrated that she did some digging and found his weakness. For the Celts, they have what are called Gaes. These are vows that can never be broken or else. Cu had 2; never eat meat from a dog, and never refuse a meal from a lady. So Medb had a woman offer him cooked dog meat. This forced him to break at least one of these Geas which reduced his power and skill by half. He still had enemies to fight though and he still did great but eventually he was mortally wounded. So the mad lad used his own entrails to tie himself to a stone so that he could die fighting and on his feet. He still killed a few enemies like this but eventually his body gave out. Since he was no longer moving, one enemy soldier went to check to see if he was dead, only to be decapitated by Cu Chulainn who DESPITE BEING DEAD, still had some fight in him. At that moment though a Raven landed on his shoulder and it was then that he finally died for good and moved no more. That's how much of a Giga Chad Lancer is

Yes well said man. I am very empathetic with idealistic protagonists as well. Actually, I don't know if you have read the latest JP summer event by Nasu, it also directly stated the same point of striving for something despite it being rather unrealistic. I felt this is some idea he constantly tries to convey in Fate, including FGO.

Just to add to this: while it's easy to see Shirou's "save everyone" ideal as naΓ―ve, you can actually draw a good comparison to real world ideals that folk have (that also get derided as naΓ―ve). Like, say someone has a goal of "get rid of discrimination" or "achieve world peace" - if asked, I'm sure a lot of people with those goals would agree that they aren't realistically possible, at least in the absolute, but they'd probably also note that that doesn't necessarily make them not worth striving towards. Maybe it's just the activist in me, but I actually have a lot of time for idealistic protagonists, especially when they acknowledge the cynical points (e.g. Archer's whole deal) but still hold to their ideals. Anyway, off my soapbox, I should probably actually get on with seeing the latest episode πŸ˜…

Woah reading this just made me realise that Saber was indeed not even his servant at that time. That just completely went out of my mind when I saw that scabbard activate cuz I'm so used to seeing Saber and Shirou as master and servant. Thanks for all this info

The Scabbard, AKA Avalon, is from Fate route, one of Saber's lost noble phantasms which grants the user eternal youth and healing power as a passive skill. In King Arthur's lore, Merlin once asked Arthur which was more important, the sword or the sheath. Arthur replied with 'the sword, since it cuts through steel'. Merlin responded 'Although the sword is very important, the sheath is ten times more. You are protected and healed by it as long as you possess it'. However, Arthur still accidentally lost the sheath, which symbolically marked the beginning of the downfall of Britain. After Shirou summoned Saber, the mana provided by Saber started Avalon running, healing Shirou's wound. After Caster took Saber, the link was cut off and we see Shirou unable to regen in all season 2. About the point that Shirou would continue Archer's path and all that timeline stuff, as the comments say Archer is indeed from a different timeline, similar to Fate route. Therefore, Shirou is not guaranteed to walk down exactly the same path as if 'it is the future'. With that being said, one of the points of UBW is that, the greatness of idealism shines when even one learns the outcome, one still presses on believing that one's ideal is correct. It is 'correct' and 'natural' for people to give up knowing the outcome is bad, but Shirou still moves in the same direction because he thinks nevertheless, this path is worth fighting for, even if the end is bad. Shirou is not here to give an ultimate solution to problems, but to show the determination to find that solution despite acknowledging he may fail. This is the same ideal Saber lived with (more to that in Fate route), so Avalon recognized such determination as it once did with Saber, thus suddenly starting working once again even when there's no master/servant connection.

So according to the author Nasu, Archer's life was very similar to the Fate Route except that he did not form a close bond with Saber, I imagine it healed him in a similar way during the grail war. At some point during his globe trotting and attempts to be a hero he lost the scabbard and it returned to Avalon the place that its named after.

This is new information for me which I very much needed. It seems like Archer knew what it was when he said "her scabbard". What experience did he have with it in his life

CrypticBoss

All of this is from the Fate route which UBW treats as known knowledge. So that Golden thing was Avalon, the Scabbard/Sheath of Excalibur, it has the ability to heal anyone who holds it when they are near Saber. Kiritsugu fused it with Shirou to save him in the fire. Its also the reason Shirou summoned Saber as a servant. That's why Shirou has been able to heal through the series.
