In the ancient forest of Loren, something is wrong: The woodland spirits are angry and resentful. As they stalk the forest floor, the two Elven scouts can feel the brooding anger of the trees; the slow, smouldering hatred of all quick-blooded life that that comes to the fore whenever the forest feels aggrieved.

They feel the hostility of every root and branch and leaf; hear the agitated singing of the sap; sense the troubled scurrying and hurrying of the forest creatures that must live in the great forest's shadow. The words are unspoken, but the Elven warrior-maidens feel the accusation in their hearts nevertheless:

"You have failed to protect us! You have broken our covenant!"

There can be only one reason for such words. And only one course of action.
