Jess was trying to stay calm and nonchalant. But the contractions were getting stronger and stronger, so she knew that the puppy was going to come soon. It was almost time for her to give birth. Still, she had resolved to get through her work.
The border collie took a deep breath, and got out of bed, preparing to face the day. She had a very busy day on her farm to complete, after all, with more than a few things to do. Nobody was going to do that for her, baby or not. And so she threw on a dress (she was a farmer, but she needed something easy to move around in at this stage of labor), and left her room, heading to the bathroom.
As she sat down on the toilet, she felt a dull pain in her back—that had been coming and going since yesterday, one of the signs of her steadily heading toward labor. Sooner or later the contractions were going to hit, too, but she was perfectly ready for them, after all. Standing up and flushing, she washed her hands and gently massaged her back a bit, letting her paws run between her fur. Then she walked outside. It was time to get to work.
Jess left her modest house and walked over to her tractor, which was parked near the fields. Darn—the disk harrow wasn’t hooked up to it yet! She had taken it off for . . . some reason, she just couldn’t remember (her brain was currently caught up in the birthing). The border collie walked back towards the house and entered the farmhouse next to it, opening the door.
The cows greeted her with moos, the horses with neighs. Jess smiled at her animals, mentally noting that she would need to milk the cows later, and went to the back, where the supplies were. Grabbing the disk harrow, she dragged it back outside, hooked it up to the tractor, and set to work disking the fields.
As she drove through her fields with the disk harrow, the instrument would till the soil for her future crops, and bring up weeds and leftovers from previous crops that she didn’t want there. It was a very useful device, Jess noted to herself. Though, with her big round belly, it was a tight squeeze to fit in her tractor—well, she was carrying two, after all.
When she finished one row, Jess turned around and move onto the next. That’s when it happened.
There was a tightening in her abdomen, and the border collie gasped, pressing the brakes on her tractor and quickly parking it. A sharp pain erupted from her midsection. It was going to begin.
The contraction started from her back, radiating from her center like a limb was going to explode out of it. Then it moved, crawling quickly to her front, reaching her core in just a matter of seconds. It felt like period cramps, only much worse—the most painful kind of cramps one could probably experience. Sure, Jess was used to them by now, but this, this was different. This was a labor contraction.
That meant a few things: these contractions would last longer and get more intense as the day went on. Furthermore, there would be less time between contractions as the birth got closer and closer. In this case, now that she was in the final stage before birth, they would likely come every few minutes, according to the books that Jess had read. She had gotten outside quite quickly, so perhaps she was lucky that they were just starting now.
The tightening in her abdomen didn’t go away for what felt like an eternity, and the pain increased in her midsection, reaching a peak. It seemed to last a lifetime, but it likely lasted about a minute.
Finally, she felt the tightening decrease, and the force went away. Jess took a moment to breathe. Then she started up her tractor, and continued disking her field.
It was only a minute later when she felt another contraction starting, and this time, Jess didn’t park. She was determined to power through this and continue her farm work, no matter what—after all, she had quite a lot to do. Plus, she had read that it was good to stay active during contractions when one was near the labor date—so all in all, this would be a good thing for her and the baby. So the border collie clenched her teeth, but continued driving as the pain shuddered through her.
Her abdomen tightened again, clenching as she drove. The cervix was getting ready to dilate, but it wasn’t quite there yet. This time, Jess noticed that her belly became harder with the contraction. She brought one paw over to her stomach, and felt that it was hard as a rock underneath her fingers. But she had read that was normal, too, so she wasn’t alarmed.
It really did feel like intense period cramps going through her, though it added a backache and pressure to her pelvis, which wasn’t overly pleasant. The contraction continued to make its way through Jess’s body as she drove, using one hand to drive and the other hand to pat her belly.
“You’re getting ready in there, aren’t you?” she cooed to the baby inside of her. As she spoke, she finished the second row of soil, and turned the tractor, moving onto the last one. “Yes you are, yes you are, sweet thing! You’re almost ready to come into the world. . . That’s just so exciting!”
As she spoke, the force on her abdomen decreased, and the pressure on her pelvis went away, until both were finally gone. The pain went down, and Jess smiled to herself as she drove the tractor. It wouldn’t be long until the next contraction came, but for the moment, at least, she could relax.
The border collie finished up the third row of soil and parked her tractor, not removing the disk harrow this time. Then she walked over to the barn to feed her animals.
She was greeted again by the cows’ and horses’ cries, and Jess smiled. Humming to herself, she got a bale of hay from the back and brought it over to the stables. She bent down to grab a sampling of hay for the first cow, when. . .
. . . It happened again. Starting at her back, a wave of pain ran through Jess’s body, quickly making its way to her front, making her belly hard and firm. The cramps brought pressure to her abdomen and pelvis, along with /another/ backache, and for a moment Jess was frozen in pain. But no, she was determined to power through this, and do what she had to do throughout the farm. And so she picked up the hay and tossed it to the first cow, then, with a heave, picked up the whole bale of hay so that she could distribute it.
The border collie walked to the other animals, tossing hay in their enclosures as she walked through the pain. The pressure in her pelvis, she noticed, was increasing—was her cervix dilating more now? That would mean her labor was nearer, and that she would see her little pup very soon—the thought made Jess smile with delight, even as she felt such intense pain.
She continued giving food to her animals as the contraction made its way through her body. The ache in her back increased, and the firmness in her belly became more prominent, too . . . or was that just her imagination? Jess sighed and focused on her job. That would make things easier.
Finally, the contraction went way: the pressure faded, the backache left, and her belly became soft again. The border collie let out a sigh of relief, and tossed hay to the last of her animals, before returning the rest of the bale to the back area, with the rest of the food.
She had noticed there was less time between that contraction and the last . . . or was it just her?
As if wanting to confirm her suspicious, another contraction started at that moment, making Jess cry out in surprise—this one was more painful than the other ones had been, and her knees shook for a moment. The pressure to her pelvis and abdomen went up, and she was certain her cervix was dilating more now.
The intense pain rocked through the border collie, but she forced herself to walk, marching forward even as the cramps rushed through her body. These ones were more intense than the ones before, she was sure of it now, and it was lasting a bit longer, too. . . Yes, that was normal, but it was still quite painful.
Fumbling through the supplies in the back, Jess found a container, her toolbox, the oil for her tractor—she had to change it today, after all. Then she forced her legs to move toward the entrance of the barn, step by step, as the pain pulsed within her.
When she finally reached it, and exited the barn, that’s when the pain decided to leave her . . . for now. Jess smiled with relief and patted her large belly. She was going to see her pup very soon—and that was the most important part of all of this.
She walked over to her tractor and placed the container on the ground. Then she opened the engine on the side, and picked up a wrench. Using the wrench, she unscrewed the drainplug, which caused the oil already in the tractor to drop into the container she had brought. Now for the next steps—
Another contraction, already?! Yes, one was coming over her right now, a cramp that spread from her back to her front, hardening her belly and bringing pain to her pelvis. Still, Jess continued her job, trying to focus on the task she had in front of her.
As she removed and replaced the oil filter, discomfort pulsed through Jess’s very being as the cramps increased in intensity, almost making her stumble—but, with determination, she grabbed the tractor and forced herself to continue. She wasn’t going to go down this easily, not in the slightest. What she didn’t notice was the water trickling from her vagina, gushing onto the ground and wetting the grass. Inside, her cervix had dilated, and the baby was making its way out. . .
She put the drain plug back, and put new oil into the tractor, smiling as she poured it inside. The border collie even started humming again, despite the pain. She was just so excited to see her pup, to experience its birth and see a new being come into the world. And the pain, as bad as it was, reminded her of that. And that was beautiful in many ways.
The cramps went away as she was running the engine. The pain went away, her belly went back to normal, and the discomfort left her pelvis. Jess shut off the engine and checked the oil one last time, then went back inside the barn. Onto her next task. . .
She had to milk the cows next. The border collie let one of the cows out of its enclosure and brought it to the center of the barn. Pulling up a stool and bringing over a bucket, she took a deep breath, and started her milking.
For a moment, it was actually quite calm. As she squeezed the cow’s teats, fresh milk trickled out and poured into the bucket, making a nice sound as liquid hit metal. Jess smiled and relaxed, focusing on her duties.
That was when she was hit by the most severe cramps yet.
Jess howled in surprise as the pain hit her, pushing against her back and belly with such intensity that she immediately grabbed her stomach. She felt a dropping sensation from the baby, like it had fallen in the pelvis, and the pelvis area itself tightened, her abdomen increasing in pain as she sat on the stool.
The border collie shook her head and resolved focused on her task. When the baby got there, then she could deal with what would come next. But for now, she had work to do.
She squeezed the cow’s teats as the pain pulse through her, with more strength than the previous cramps (which was, in some ways, a bit hard to believe, but there it was). There was a burning sensation in her midsection, like her vagina was on fire, and it was a powerful feeling. But Jess took a deep breath, and did her best to focus on milking the cows, squeezing the teats and alternating between one teat and the other, smiling at the sight of fresh milk.
When the border collie had gotten all the milk she could get out of that cow, Jess forced herself to stand. It took a minute, as she still felt like her midsection was on fire—it stung like nothing she had ever felt before! But she still stood nevertheless, and walked slowly, herding the cow back to its pen. When the animal was inside, she closed the door, and then leaned against the wall, taking deep breaths as the contractions rippled through her.
Finally, thankfully, the pain in her back and midsection faded, and her belly went from firm to soft again. Jess reached out and rubbed it with her paw. But something was off. . . She still felt like something was burning between her legs. Why did she still feel this sensation?
The border collie reached down and lifted up her dress to see what was going on. And what she saw made her cry out in delighted surprise.
It was her baby! The head of her puppy was fully visible in the birth canal now, and she could see its closed eyes, its cute little ears, its beautiful nose. It all made Jess want to tear up, because she was almost there! She just had to push now, push for her pup. And then, her baby would be here.
The baby had crowned. Now, there was only a little more work to be done.
The border collie pushed, pushed with all her might, driven by a deep love and desire to meet her new puppy. As she did, pain rippled through her, making her stagger on her feet, but she refused to drop to the ground. She panted as she gave birth, a wave of intense physical sensations rushing over her, along with intense emotions too.
More than the pain, she honestly, truthfully, felt . . . good. Because she was finally going to meet her baby, because there was a sense of /togetherness/ with her child that she couldn’t fully express, but felt amazing. Everything else—the barn, the cows and horses, the tractor, the field, the house, /everything/—had faded away, and the only thing that matter was this moment, between mother and child. This pleasurable, comforting, lovely moment.
The baby cried and screamed as it was released from the womb. Jess smiled and almost cried upon hearing it—that was her daughter down there, her child was finally here! More determined than ever, Jess pushed harder, wanting so much to meet her pup that the desire completely took her over, consuming her in the best way.
She couldn’t tell how much time was passing. It could have been minutes, or it could have been hours. But she pushed and pushed, getting her child out of the womb, through her cervix, and into the world, wanting so badly to know her puppy. The baby whined and screamed as Jess pushed, going deeper and deeper into labor. The intense pleasure and delight she had to meet her kid was only increasing for her, now that the moment was getting closer. She could feel more and more of the puppy leaving her, slipping out of her vagina and entering the world—just a little more! Just a little more!
Jess barely felt the pain anymore. She screamed in determination as her baby left her, wanting only that single desire. Nothing else was on her mind; nothing else mattered. There was only this.
And then, finally, it was done.
Jess gave the final push, and her pup was completely out. The border collie caught her baby, and took some deep breaths, looking at the little one’s face.
From the genitals, it was a girl, and for a baby, she was suddenly quite quiet. Her brown eyes were wide and inquisitive, and she looked up at Jess with a questioning look.
The border collie couldn’t help but laugh, feeling delight and warmth surge through her. “Why, hello there,” she said, leaning down and kissing her baby on the cheek. “I’m your mommy. And you are. . .”
She paused for a minute, remembering the names she had chosen for a female dog. Which one suited this inquisitive pup? “You are Magnolia,” Jess finally said, licking her puppy on the head. “Magnolia, my daughter.”
The puppy let out a whine, and Jess stood up, using all her strength to do so. She walked to the back room of the barn, and pulled out a towel. Then she wrapped it around the baby, so that her pup’s head was sticking out. “There,” Jess said, smiling at the little one. “You’re nice and warm now. Doesn’t that feel a lot better?”
Magnolia let out a cooing little noise, and closed her eyes. A moment later, the baby was fast asleep in Jess’s arms.
The border collie giggled, and hugged her puppy tight. Today had been a lot for both of them, and she was glad to welcome her new little pup into the world.
When Magnolia woke up, Jess would breastfeed her. But for now, she sat with her baby, smiling.
