Hello everyone! :)
Here is a new video for you guys! This one is a painting edition 🥰💗 I wanted to challenge myself to skip the sketch stage and go straight to painting, so you'll get to see how I do it in this video :)
I also do the grayscale to color method in this video, which I haven't done in sooo long!! So you'll get to watch the process of how I paint and render a face in grayscale first and then add color to it afterward 🌈
Make sure to adjust the video quality to HD for clarity! :) ⚙️✨
For those of you who are curious about this technique, here are some tips about the grayscale to color method (with timestamps):
At 16:09 I use Curves to adjust the red levels of the drawing so that all the grayscale shifts to more of a red palette. For this to work, the drawing needs to be on one layer which you can do by flattening your layers or copying and pasting your canvas onto a new layer :)
At 16:14 I create a multiply layer and paint over the skin with a skin tone color. It usually looks really saturated at this stage, but that's ok because we'll just be painting over it :) This adds a nice vibrant base for us to work with.
After that point, I'll work on a normal layer (starting with the eye color at 16:38) and continue working on normal layers to add other colors to the skin as well as darker values to the eyes, lips, nose, etc. Most of your values were already established in the grayscale stage, so use your normal layers to add new hues of color and extra textures/details!
Adjusting the overall color palette after some rendering is a good idea too since it can help to unify your colors! I do this at 20:38 in Curves again, with everything on one layer :)
For extra vibrancy, I like to create an Overlay layer and paint some brightness onto the skin and the eyes like you see me doing at 28:48! This really starts to breathe some life into the painting 🥰 Try this for highlighted areas, like inner eye corners, lip corners, the center of the chin, cheekbones, etc. ~
I hope you all enjoy watching! 🥳 Stay tuned for another video I'll be posting later this week which will be a real-time coloring process of my Zuko sketches! 🔥
Love you all :)
