Clearly yes, since the shot was from above, and if it had missed Sciona it would have struck the river. And as far as predicting where it went, I'd like to point out that the angle at which the shot hit Sciona's force wings was much more likely to be in Sciona's control than in Maxima's. Yes, I was taught to be aware of ricochet, from *hard flat surfaces*. I have yet to hear of an incident in which a police officer's shot bounced off of *their intended target*.

Foradain

The background was the river.

Really, she should've done a leading shot into the river, to vaporize and blast up hot boiling dirty water into Sciona's face, making her have to dodge, stop, or otherwise deal with environment rather than the incoming follow-up attack. And this is TWO times that Max failed at "watch out for the background" and in any other military, she'd be given an appropriate scourging for it. So waiting to see what happens with that. (She might be cleared after but you know she's gonna get READ.)

You can almost hear the "Woops..." in whisper from here.

Was this intended to be a killing blow? I argue probably. This was nowhere near a full-power blast for Max, but it was still powerful enough to go right through a suspension bridge tower and explode on the other side. And at no point we've observed has Max ever been told exactly *how* durable Sciona is. Unless it was covered in some briefing about Alari. And if it *were* covered, the part where Alari have wings that can possibly deflect one of Max's plasma(?) bolts should have been covered. So I suggest that Max made a judgment call here, and the correct one. She observes Sciona suddenly swerve toward a populated bridge. Even if Max doesn't know exactly what abilities Sciona has, she knows that Sciona could probably take out the bridge in a very messy manner. Max probably doesn't have the speed to intercept Sciona in time, or she might have gone for a physical tackle instead of a ranged attack. That leaves Max with exactly one option. A relatively low-power blast that should have been enough to at least blow Sciona into the water, slowing her down enough for Max to catch up. Unfortunately, Max didn't know Sciona could actually deflect the blast. I suspect it's never happened to her before.

Dark Storymaker

Seems like Max got the BOOM timing wrong. It *should* have exploded right after it hit Sciona, but instead had enough time to ricochet and go through the bridge support. Next time, Max, have it explode early, like an airburst.

Erin Palette

Maybe intense enough to make even *Max* nervous.

I predict a full-on Arianna meltdown over this incident.

Churchill (formerly TeaBear)

It could have been worse; it could have been the busload of orphans and singing nuns heading toward the puppy and firecracker store.

Michael Obert

This looks like a job for Hellboy.

NOT THE KITTENS

Rusty Rowboat

This might be a real break for Sciona. Max may have to shift to damage control.

For Sciona the equivalent of a rubber bullet is for a human, for the bridge a hot exploding knife through butter.

PSadlon

Ooopsies?!?!?!?

They'll be fine. They've got all those souffles to land on!

Andrew Denton

No! Not the emergency cuddle kittens!

BJ

To be fair, she said "prepare to miss your target", not "prepare for hitting your target and ricocheting"

John

i love the drivers shield xD

Max will get some shit for this as it was a rash attach near civilians when there was no threat and against her own advise to Sidney. http://grrlpowercomic.com/archives/1223
