Possible, I suppose, for a certain type of mind to memorize a galaxy, or the portion one plans to visit, anyway. There might even be advantages over having a physical map. A mental map could not fall into the hands of an enemy unless you are captured, for one. It instantly updates as soon as you know about a change, for another. It would be hard to have a map of places one doesn't already know, however. And that is the main reason I use maps - I'm fine with places I've been, even once years ago, though changes due to new buildings and such can confuse me sometimes - getting to new places. So I think there is probably a map in there somewhere...just gotta figure out how to read the glyphs enough to pull it up. 'Course it will be for a universe X years ago, so no telling how out of date it might be. It is even possible the orbs might predate the Earth! (cool thing about a map is, comparing it to current stellar positions would tell us how old the orbs (or at least the map data) are, unless it has a google update feature...) If they do predate the Earth, they would either have been abandoned in space and migrated to the nearest habitable mass as a fail-safe, or just happened to fall into our gravity well as meteors. Possible they ignore gravity wells, in which case they would have been in the path of Earth as it orbits. Or, I suppose, the orbs could be older, but in use until more recently and brought here by a user, then for some reason abandoned. I'm sure Dave has a scenario all worked out, which is good, because none of these seem especially likely to me...

Dabber as a traveling companion would certainly be interesting, good and/or bad (or is that naughty).

except her version fits in the palm of her hand instead of being a harness, is safe (arguably) for a normal human being to use and comes with the other orbs... me thinks Orion's cosmic segway loses out overall...

They were broken a while back. Cora looks to be fabricating new ones for her though.

Did I miss something? Where are her glasses?

Interstellar.

Justaguy

No warning against popping off interspellar whammies in an atmosphere?

Justaguy

Are the updates coming faster?

Congratulations! What did you win?

“Right, so any time you get lost, you simply cook up this extra-spicy grakz ... and out comes the starmap”

...I imagine that it would be easier to memorize the location of every black hole in the galaxy than the entire galaxy. Ergo the orbs were designed by/for someone who was actually worried about traveling somewhere they were familiar with and discovering it had become a black hole - and the override means they wanted to be able to travel to such places anyway once they were aware of this, similar to a soldier walking into a house despite knowing someone had set an IED. So to put it simply, Sydney's got Orion's Astro-Harness from Jack Kirby's New Gods.
