Grrl Power #918 - Ghost fight!

Thanks so much for your support!

To view the full-size version... left-click, right-click, new tab. You guys have figured it out by now.

I didn't really have any idea how this fight was going to end when I introduced HenchWench, but a lot of you were like "Hey, wouldn't it be funny if..." and I agreed. So yeah, I'm super telegraphing the next page, and I apologize in advance if Arianna doesn't use super proper lawyer speak, but hopefully you guys will be amused anyway.

Concretia never learned to fight. She's too slow in her stone form for anything but basic ass punching and grappling (depending on the Mohs scale - if she formed a body out of talc or something, she'd be, well, not fast. Like, human speed. But then you could fuck her up with a steel toed boot or a bucket of water. Her concrete form is best described as "lumbering" and anything harder she becomes noticeably slower) And as has been established in the comic, supers are rare enough that they don't usually grow up in clusters, so she never really needed to learn how to fight. Especially considering that if you smash her golem, she can just form a new one, and regular solid objects can't affect her concrastral projection. When the evil strip-miners or company-that-wanted-to-shut-down-the-ski-resort or whatever threatened her town, she had no trouble running them out of town.

HenchWench, on the other hand, probably has known other supers for some time. After reading some discussion in the comments, I decided she's not a contract lawyer, but a paralegal, as they don't have the same ethical requirements as an actual lawyer. I know it's weird thinking of lawyers as having ethics, but the point is, you can't disbar a paralegal for literally being evil.

That weird goosenecked yacht is where the bad guys were keeping Concretia's body. I hope that's clear. Apparently that yacht is some crazy concept design, and the gooseneck could lower to the water, and the goose head is actually a detachable speedboat. I was looking for yacht references to draw from, and I saw that and said, "Yeah, that's definitely the boat these turds would sail around in."

"Good evening Miss Wench. I looked over this contract of yours. It's really a thing of beauty, and utterly ironclad, to boot. On all parties. So I decided to buy your company, not Archon, just me personally. The only powers you get to copy are mine. Sucks to be you, but I can always use another pair of hands around the office. See you Monday."

Wait, does Hench Wench lose her powers when she's no longer an employee, or does she have to *know* that she's no longer an employee? Can she keep her powers indefinitely by refusing to listen? What if she's not an employee, but honestly believes she is? Epistemologists want to know!

Beechwood Chip

We all need a good nemesis. (Dr. Doom agrees.)

Joseph Bonnar

With Warren Zevon.

Joseph Bonnar

I've seen the lawyer, and the guns, now where's the money?

Town Crier

#Oh Shit So long Henchwench, it's been real.

DavidJ

I have an idea on how this is going to go down, but either way I hope HenchWench swears vengeance and becomes Arianna's nemesis.

RanmaChaos

What happens if Concretia just suddenly says "I QUIT!"

Bryce Maryott

It would be very amusing if simply finding a part of the contract - such as Concertia's participation - is nullified, that Henchwench loses part of her powers. What changed? Nothing. Only Henchwench's perception of things. Which has a disturbing implication. If she can convince herself of her own reality despite all evidence to the contrary - like a certain large group of people that were recently in the news - could she give herself any power she desired?

Eric Loken

I was wondering what that thing was, I thought some sort of alien ship but couldn't figure how it fit into the story. But based on a real yacht? Yikes. Must be nice to have way more money than brains. And I love the idea that this girl legaled (probably not a word) her way into being OP, and is then going to get squished by a purely mundane human lawyer who can out legal her. That is highly amusing. :)

Eric Loken

Yeah Warren Zevon got the order wrong, Guns, and lawyers and money. Dave got the order right!

Doug Northcote

as a technical point. "better fighter" is a terrible thing to say when you have such awful hand placement by henchwench in a rear naked choke. She sucks. I blame here not you Dave. I think it's intentional. The hands should both be reversed, the one on the forearm locking that arm to the leverage arm behind. That upper hand should be turned over and locked on top of Concretias head. yes, Moderately nice reverse out of the choke, missed doing a good foot stomp as well while getting out of it (I know I know, off panel etc) Choke "technique" blather ensues. Also, phone call from contract lawyer in middle of fight, Not a good sign for ol Henchy. Good lord, now i'm rooting for a frak'n lawyer. What have we come too!? Btw, reading your Tamer book right now. Pretty darn good!

Doug Northcote

I'm glad Concretia is getting this chance. I liked her and her power concept since the first encounter.

GlitchedGent

RICO them!!!

Stan

If Concretia was forced to sign the contract under duress, that might negate her portion of the contract making her not legally part of the corp and thus negating her power set from the corp. Even further, there might be other legal actions such as administratively disbanding the corp by the state or the courts.

Krahazik

To begin with, concrete by its nature is a mixed medium to begin with. Being formed of cement, aggregate, sand and water.

Krahazik

So, why does Concretia think that she has to be all one material? Has she tried mixed mediums (obviously not); like concrete fists and nothing else. She could still punch hard, but might be a lot faster.

Town Crier

choke me harder mommy *cough*

martin leske

Oh GOD... They've sent in the LAWYERS!

Joseph Bonnar

Wasn't it said that HW's powers work only on villains? When does Concretia stop counting as a villain for that? Or does the contract have some wording like for the purposes of this contract all signed are considered villains? Would that work with heroes? And when Arianna finds a way to nullify the contract, does HW loose her powers immediately or only when she's made aware of it? Do HW's powers lock her into being a villain henchwoman or could the contract just have wording that steers around that? I mean Concretia has to technically be one of her bosses but realistically she was in a much worse position.

Martin Drkoš

You can see Concretia's physical body behind Sydney & Cora.

Michael Altarriba

That'd be hot.

Czarzhan

Villains Inc. has a boat in the shape of a swan? How tacky can you get?!? Halo and Cora struck a blow for justice AND good taste!

Michael Gulick

Lawyer powers activate!

Michael Obert

Good that you mention it, I didn't understand that the boat is where Cora and Sydney got the body of Concretia from. And as they are nowhere to be seen on the panel itself, I didn't follow that. Maybe a small addenda would help? Like drawing them small in the background somewhere, on the roof of a building.

strfan

If not for the claim that you're telegraphing the next page, I'd expect Hench Wench to pull out "Infernal Law doesn't care about Mortal Law" in response to Arianna.

James

Haha, if you can't beat 'em, buy 'em. I wonder what kind of golden parachute HW has in her contract.

akrasia

So. What of concretia forms a body out of molten rock?

Justaguy

That's not a choke hold Concretia is using, even if they do need to breathe. HW is using one, though. I can definitely see those bad guys in that yacht. They looked like the sort to keep a low profile.

Marc Vun Kannon

That was a helluva quick rescue. At mach 16 Sydney got them there before anyone heard them leave. Concretia should join Archon and get some better training. Or maybe retire. Not sure she really wants to be a hero, but with geokinesis she can do quite a lot in the private sector.

Marc Vun Kannon

Or at least the bodies are recognizable.

Martin Drkoš

Cocretia seemed plenty fast when she ambushed Sidney and her moves looked like straight out of Avatar.

Martin Drkoš

Looks like Cora showed restraint in the rescue. There are survivors.

Graeme Thorburn

I can't believe Arianna is going to get a chance to save the day. Concretia you should always stomp them when they're down that way they don't get up and kick your ass.
