Grrl Power #1280 - Kneedful things

Thank you for the support! You guys are awesome!

Not the most surprising turn of events, admittedly.

Math was like "let me look at some anatomy charts for youse guys so I don't accidentally explode your appendoid, or your vom deference, or your pancreatic couscous , or your cumulonimbus duodenum, or your exoprostate, or your tarsal areala.

But in fact he was looking for exactly the sorts of things martial artists might like to jab their one-finger push-up fingers.

And if you're wondering why Cora's maliens aren't ganging up on Math, that will become relevant in a page or two. Or... three? Soon.

I think I've been overdoing the speedlines, so I pulled back on this page. Arguably too much? I'll find the formula just as this sequence is coming to a close, and then forget everything I've learned by the time the next action scene rolls around.

Not sure I agree. Looks more like a posturing/expression of confidence and accomplishment to me, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Brett Peirce

Never seen it in the knees, but for the elbow, here in Sweden it's sometimes called hitting the "tjuvnerven", or "the thief's nerve" and it HURTS LIKE THE DICKENS!!!! So I don't blame Big Red for hopping around like that at all.

Tim

👍And you can quote me on that. 😝

eddi_TBH

This is for funsies. If they ganged up Math might have to seriously hurt someone.

eddi_TBH

He did do that. But he got the effect he was looking for on Altus, no damage to the skeletal structure but he and Altus are dealing with similar pain and numbness.

eddi_TBH

Exactly! That's why he had those notes on his opponents anatomy.

eddi_TBH

I bet his elbow hurts about as much as Altus' knee.

eddi_TBH

His knee is still intact. That was a nerve strike. Hitting the funny bone X100.

eddi_TBH

Perfect funny bone strike. And they're both acting funny. "This is gonna hurt me more than it gonna hurt you."

eddi_TBH

I agree about panel 4. Looks just right to me. For the specific action, I also think panel 3 looks right.

Tim Starliper

"Not all species have their genitals in the same place" XD

Hogan

Speed lines look good on this one as well. Gets it across without overwhelming.

Doug Northcote

She is just helping Math work on his biggest weakness...

Scott McCarthy

Yup, he's posing like a goof.

Dave Barrack

Have you ever hit your elbow's "funny bone"? It's a sensitive nerve cluster that, when struck, sends weird tingles up your arm and into your hand. Given the caption under the main comic and above the mini-comic about the scratches, that would appear to be what happened to Math.

Czarzhan

I can only picture Math being voiced by Bryan Cranston after this page.... because of the Street Fighter 2 animated movie where he voiced Fei Long (which is also one of the best animated fight scenes *ever*)

Magraal

"And if you're wondering why Cora's maliens aren't ganging up on Math, that will become relevant in a page or two" I am wondering that. The way he stays there in the middle they should have swarmed him

Todd Ellner

Nope! I think Math accidentally hit his funny bone (ulnar nerve) when elbowing the knee joint.

Ampws

Math funny boned his friggin knee?!

Aaron Mauthe

Yeah I'm really not certain he has no powers. Hitting a front end loader's joints will mess up your fist even if you know just where to hit. Just because that front end loader is shaped like a person doesn't change that.

Mark Magagna

He's probably done something to better his night vision, with that as a side effect. No, I have no idea what you can practice hitting that has the effect of making you see better in the dark. But Math has probably researched it.

Mark Magagna

Yeah, going "tiger style" is only recommended at certain times. And not others.

Mark Magagna

Sounds like a plan, Dave!

Brett Peirce

Sydney: " Recent scars you say ?" *😏knowing eyebrows 😏*

Terence Bryant-White

The speedlines are a great representation of Math's 'power'. Keep them.

Adam C.

Exactly. This is the ideal way to do speed lines. Enough to imply/indicate motion while having other things around that aren't moving as fast to help convey the degree of motion. The other page was making me think of the slow fast-punch from IGPX with the occasional bit of Z Warrior power aura's from Dragonball Z.

Anton Schleef

I'm not entirely sure he doesn't have powers. Learning that many different martial arts and being able to utilize them all effectively is well outside human norm, so that I'd call a power, it's just a power that doesn't give him any inherent physical advantages that a baseline human can't achieve with training and he puts in the training needed.

Anton Schleef

Joints in general are a weak point, especially when they are supporting weight.

Anton Schleef

Why are Math's pupils always constricted? Does he suffer from a version of miosis? Is he actually of a human subspecies that hang out in the dark all the time?

Town Crier

Also is Math just doing a full kung fu goofy ending in that last panel?

Fogel

He's not full on moving here, so it makes sense that there's fewer speed lines

Fogel

He is annoying but he is a funny kind of annoying because he is unmalicious. He feels no need to harp on his superiority because he *knows* he is just that good. If others can't see it, all the better for him. He is arrogant but without being a bully.

Simon Magid

Combined with the face I was thinking it was a "Wow that hurt my elbow a lot more than I though it would."/fighting-through-the-pain/funnybone-tingles woo.

Thorbjørn Steen

It's got to be a Jean Claude van Damme "WooOoo" to go with the split.

Woodrobin

Those are from when she uses Rabbit Style. It's not terribly useful in combat, but she insists on practicing it with Math whenever they have the opportunity.

Varyon

Ah yes. Those scratches. That's when she uses her cheetah style in, uh, 'special training circumstances'.

Playwars

With respect to the speed lines, I personally think this is just fine. You've got enough to communicate the path and speed of motion without looking too busy.

Torabi

Math backs up his cockiness. Even if they get some payback on him, he's shown he's not a lightweight by any means.

Seth Ruskin

Oh yeah, and is that a Bruce Lee "woo" at the end, or a Ric Flair? Probably Lee, but my head canon has it as pure Nature Boy. Woo!

Mike

Out of everyone in this comic, I'd say math has more of my respect than anyone. No powers, yet he can stand toe to toe with many that do. I'd say the same about the other non-powered team members, but we haven't seen as much of them as Math. Seneca seems cool, bad ass with the funny sweet eating side of her. Goose is, of course, Duke Nukem. Peggy and that SEAL whatever his name was are surely good too. But Math seems to be a level past them.

Mike

There’s a similar nerve complex on the outside of the human leg, just above the knee. We were actually trained to aim for that area during my baton and handcuffs course. Doesn’t matter how much muscle your opponent has, you strike that nerve hard enough and both their legs will collapse under them.

Matthew Thompson

Faces are good, joints are better. And, uh, go Jabber! 😍

Michael Obert

Think you got the speedlines right on panel 4, maybe needed one or two more on panel 3.

Justaguy

I like the pulled back speed lines they were getting to be a bit much. But oh man I love maths wooo face at the end. It would make ric flair proud, and I want it as a reaction face.

TrixieTurner

Well, human knees are very fragile too.

Thomas Dorner
