Grrl Power #1288 - Horrorito

Thank you for the support! You guys are awesome!

I had to re-write half of this page moments before posting, because I watched (part of) Trigun like, 25-ish years ago, and I did not remember most of the significant things that appear in the wiki when I went to double check it. Good thing I did, or all the comments would have been about how I must have mixed up Trigun or Vash with another anime. Apparently Vash is a plant? Yeah, it's been a long time since I've seen that show.

I have not ever read any kind of slash fiction. I don't even like regular fan fiction. (Ignore the two books I wrote that are technically fan fiction.) I assume all fan fiction is either going to be generally pretty terrible, or would be good enough to be annoying when the author inserts one crazy element that is their own personal fan fetish. (In this episode of FanFic Stargate SG1, Teal'c gets turned into a sapient inflatable pool toy.) Or, it's some terrible O.C. insert who no one but the author cares about, or worst of all, it's actually really good to the point that now I'm mad it's not canon.

But slash fic? Yeah, no interest there for me. There's clearly an audience for it, so I thought it'd be kind of funny if Sydney was into it. Coming up with a pairing wasn't too hard. Justifying the pairing was... well, actually pretty easy when I was using a misremembered Vash. After reading up on Vash and editing the page to match? Honestly, I think it's actually not a crazy idea. I  personally still don't want to read about dudes making out, but... if you told me someone had already written that meetup? I'd just nod.

ARC weapons research department is as well.

Martin Drkoš

I'm pretty sure she just added red food coloring to pure capsaicin extract, the 7th orb secretly protects her (and her lungs) from otherwise lethal chemical burns.

IvyReed

Sydney is all: "Yeah being possessed by your girlfriend made me into you, so what" and they are NOT having it.

IvyReed

But that would just make for good marketing! "The blend so volatile it needs to be made in a vacuum chamber!" (Small font: disclaimer: any usage as a weapon or riot deterrent is not intended and we are not liable for such usage) lol Sydney should try to sell that stuff or something so we get a page of the FDA or whatever banning it immediately and saying she made a hazardous weapon

Reigys

No you don't. Attempting to recreate it in reality might result in spontaneous combustion at some point. During the mixing phase if you're lucky. Or a pyrophoric reaction on contact with saliva if you aren't.

eddi_TBH

Now I really want to know what's in her secret spice blend!

Reigys

yep. I have a bunch of powdered cacao that I use in different recipes ... I like bitter chocolate

William Elliott

You are correct, and missing my point.

Bharda Sullivan

I just knew it was Reece's shell. And I was cool with what was going on up until that point. There's nothing cold in that food. It's not going to be shell, just very oily semi-chocolate goo.

TIPDucky

DEATH in a corn tortilla.

eddi_TBH

Remember her first meal at the mall downstairs? She went back and bought a bottle of Unmaker from the chef. It's like she's toting a pocket antimatter grenade.

eddi_TBH

Serious bodily harm coming and going.

eddi_TBH

Cacao is actually bitter, like coffee. Spicy or sweet cut through that basic taste to smooth it out.

eddi_TBH

Peanut butter and bananas are a common snack. Capt'n Crunch puts callouses on your palate. Back off on the peppers and chili powder a tad. Unless you are already at Carolina Reaper level.

eddi_TBH

That is a very Sydney breakfast. High energy, high Scoville.

eddi_TBH

Simple, she is not entirely human. Why do you think she has the space wizard orbs?

akrasia

Or his face melts off "Raiders of the Lost Ark" style 😅

Terence Bryant-White

You are the exact kind of person i would fight in a denny's parking lot

ThatOneComicGuy

IIRC it was the 10th Doctor

Jacob Bissey

I took that as more friendly/playful flirting than an actual attempt at seduction/expressing interest. I flirt with people in my friend group I'm not personally attracted to all the time, and it seems like it fits with Sydney's banterful style of communication which is rather similar to my own. Sometimes somebody just gives you a perfect opening for an amazing line that's just too good of an opportunity to pass up, that's more or less what happened here, IMO.

Jacob Bissey

There's also Reese's chocolate syrup, which *might* be chocolate peanutbutter? I haven't looked super closely at it since I either buy Hershey or whatever's the cheapest option when I get chocolate sauce, which I haven't done in a long time.

Jacob Bissey

IIRC the original hot chocolate used corn/maize, so it was essentially sweetened with cornsyrup (I'm not sure what exactly they did to make the corn into a drinkable ingredient, but it probably wasn't whatever they do to make cornsyrup today, so it wouldn't *technically* be cornsyrup, but more or less). It was often also spiced, but a sweetener was present, just not cane or beet sugar.

Jacob Bissey

Licking the plate afterward is half the fun, especially if at least part of your motivation is to squick out the other people at the table

Jacob Bissey

Seeing all that without the context makes me torn because it sounds really cool, but I'm not sure if I want to get all the cool context by watching the series or if I want to preserve how funny it sounds out of context by not watching the series. I've heard nothing but good things about Trigun and it's been on my list of classic anime I should probably at least try at some point if only for the sake of completeness for a while now, so I'm certain it would be worth watching, but those out of context details make me laugh in a way in-context details never can.

Jacob Bissey

He wouldn't know about the spicy bits.

Marc Vun Kannon

She didn't then, she may now.

Marc Vun Kannon

Somehow I can see the poor unknowing Lizardman alien taking Sydneys offer to try it and possibly being a spice fan as well. Or exploding. :P

Brett

She doesn't, that's how they rescued Halo.

Richard Riley

if im not wrong Vash was an Artifical Liveform really old and either the "powerplant/Lightbulb" were also AI's just without body or the "eggs" ps: ok not AI just artificial liveforms and just Vash and his brother have bodys and are Sentient most others are "just" used to gain power and to transform matter

Otoger

😆

Michael Obert

She could have easily saved all that gooey goodness by folding the back end burrito style, but as an adhd haver as well conversation auto pilot do be a bitch sometimes

ThatOneComicGuy

I think the original chocolate drink used peppers for spice. Sugar was a European thing.

Mark Magagna

Lapha doesn't look happy about her flirting with her boyfriend, hard to tell with her face structure but it looks like she's narrowing her eyes

Brad Kirkwood

Banana Peanut butter Cap'n Crunch Reaper slices Death Powder Reece's Shell

Dave Barrack

Tom Baker is and always will be the best Doctor for me as well. It didn't hurt that some of his episodes were written by Douglas Adams.

Dave Barrack

I'd try it, that sounds good actually

🎭Orpheus Wren🐦🏳️‍⚧️♂️Zaunking of Words

The flaming strap-on was inspired.

GMScooter

I think I'd sooner eat Ally Sheedy's sandwich from "The Breakfast Club."

Stephen Gilberg

With a half-woof?! Who might change shape under the full moon?!

Stephen Gilberg

There is also a chocolate bar made by the rooster brand sriracha, it's actually quite good, especially the dark chocolate bar with sea salt

Terence Bryant-White

A note on peppers and sweet stuff, there is actually a chocolate brand [Linders or Ghiradelle IIRC] that has a dark chocolate and hot pepper bar which is actually kinda good. Also, I wasn't sure I'd like it but after trying it, a Johnny Silverhand is my favorite mixed drink and its got a chili garnish [I use Chipotle]. Tequila old fashioned with a splash of Cerveza and a chili garnish, specifically. You'd be surprised what a little spike of that does for flavor. Also, with the amount of it that Syd eats, she probably has to amp up flavors just to taste anything anymore.

William Elliott

Nutella, Banana and Cap'n Crunch? I'm in. If you need Reapers or Reaper Sauce, I know the guy. No, really, I know THE guy. I still buy his stuff like a normal person because local business, but yeah, I can hook you up.

Christopher Upton

Two things, one until the peppers, that burrito was a totally viable food option. Two, was Sydney flirting with him? I would imagine some of Lapha's attraction would have transferred during the merge right?

Shade Jones

I mean, it ain't a pepper, those hands are otherwise occupied

DonnieRamesJio

His eyes in the last panel says "I have concerns here about your dietary choices".

09Klr650

Bonus points for the MST3K reference!

farrell1701

How is Lapha not going through some serious PTSD right now? Or does she consider this baby food too?

Marc Vun Kannon

"Like for mama, yes?" "But I didn't hate my mother, that was an accident."

Marc Vun Kannon

I've had quite a few people telling me they wish I'd been in the writers' room. I'm a fixer when it comes to fan fiction, I only write stuff to repair plot holes and improve the story.

Marc Vun Kannon

It’s Reese’s chocolate sauce

Aaron Mauthe

Peanut butter on a tortilla? Done it. Throw in a banana? Sounds good. Capn Crunch? Yeah, okay. I will stop there, everything else is a pretty solid 'no' including what I'm pretty sure is chocolate sauce.

Raymond Dannelly

I mean, I could see hellish torment be violation with a Carolina Reaper. That would burn like a MOFO.

Michael Obert

Several thousand scovilles worth of death. (Actually the 6th image is I think some sort of chocolate sauce. Maybe some thing like Ice Magic that you normally put on icecream and it hardens up?)

Justaguy

Reses chocolate sauce, I think? https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.be4459cac452cd978909d088d300bd10?rik=FxG3oaxJFGU4ww&pid=ImgRaw&r=0

Raymond Dannelly

That's not chili powder, nor are those chili slices. Sydney would consider such things "baby food." The powder is "Sydney's Secret Powdered Death," and the pepper slices are CAROLINA REAPER slices.

Madcat6204

What is she pouring in the 6th image? Reaper something maybe.

Wyrmhand

That started pretty good. A banana and peanut butter sandwich is delicious. But the Sydney twist is... quite twisty Also got damnit Sydney, is this your first team eating a burrito or something? You're supposed to fold it so the food doesn't fall out

Fogel

For real! that much capsaicin and vinegar would give most people ulcers.

codesurfer

1) How does Sydney not have an ulcer by now?! 2) based on what i saw in Trigun: Stampede, since I saw that a lot more recently than the original that i saw back in the 00's, Vash would honestly prefer to use the Doctor's tools. Like Sydney points out he more uses the gun in the same way as Max does as a bluff, and as a multi use tool to quickly disarm attackers. 3) Which version of the Doctor is she writing Slash fic for because while I think the current doctor (15) would make for great chemistry I doubt Sydney would have seen him since this comic takes place in weird time space due to publishing constraints

codesurfer

Oh god, I love everything about this page. Except for the things I hate on it, which I also kind of love. It's a kind of love/hate. Hove. Late.

Torabi

You also saw it as a demon red strap-on on the logo?

Ronnie Henriksen

I can't tell if he is flabbergasted by Sydney calling him pretty, or her lack of reaction to her lunch.

Jared Kolbly

Oh the humanity...

3of4

That combination... 🤢 One could think that Sydney ist pregnant 😜

Alexander D

Honestly, that tiny shake of sugary cereal and minimal smear of what I assume is Nutella are pretty reasonable, all other things being equal. I’m not even put off by the what-I-assume-to-be chili powder, as I’ve had chili chocolate before, and can vouch for. No, what worries me is the liberal dose of what appears to be pickled chili pepper slices. Vinegar, chocolate, and banana are not going to play nice together.

Bharda Sullivan

Sydney's diet. Oh Lord. I was giggling the entire time I read the page. Not sure about that particular pairing. I never really got into the new doctor. I'm firmly a Tom Baker Fourth Doctor fan. Since he's the first Doctor I watched, to me he's the epitome of the character. As for Vash...I watched most of that when it came out in like '98 or 2000, so I've forgotten just about everything about the story.

Gelatinous Cube

Love the Sidney's secret death powder 😁

Rob Wright

“when the author inserts one crazy element that is their own personal fan fetish. (In this episode of FanFic Stargate SG1, Teal'c gets turned into a sapient inflatable pool toy.)” — no need to specify "FanFic" there. Just a reminder that SG1's "Emancipation" (the episode where the well-educated blonde woman, Sam Carter, gets kidnapped by foreign-coded savages on another planet for marriage purposes, which was decried as horribly racist) and TNG's "Code of Honor" (the episode where the well-educated blonde woman, Tasha Yar, gets kidnapped by foreign-coded savage-seeming aliens on another planet for marriage purposes, which was decried as horribly racist) were both written by the same well-educated blonde woman.

James C

That's not a diet, that's a war crime. I know it's been established already, but thanks just further proof Syndey's real superpower is an impervious stomach. Also, love the reaper sauce picture 😆😍

Michael Obert

That logo is out of pocket

DonnieRamesJio

So just to be clear, is that a banana-nutella-cap'n crunch-death-extra death burrito?
