Weekly Journal (October 7th)

Morning y'all! Not a ton of updates for you right now other than some backlog progress. Return of The Obra Dinn is officially in the books and I really quite enjoyed it! This game was a welcome break from the fast paced combat and stressful survival exploration of Silksong as it was all about deduction and piecing together a mystery.

This is one of the fan voted backlog games and it's essentially a big "Sherlock Holmes on a 18th century ship" simulator. It has hints of those "mind detective" games like AI The Somnium Files as well since you see every death from this 3D walkable portrait. You trot through each memory and note little details like where bullets are flying, what people are wearing, when this memory took place in time, what people said, accents, language, location, tattoos, motivations. It all BEAUTIFULLY plays together for a task that feels... initially impossible, but is so incredibly satisfying once you start piecing things together and actually making progress.

I wont spoil some of the bigger plot points, but let's just say there will be some memories you go into thinking "Oh I'm sure it's just another murder" and then are completely blindsided by something you could never have guessed. Obra Dinn does a great job of keeping you on your toes.

So yeah! Shoutout to anyone who recommended this and to anyone who wanted it to be recommended but voted for something else. This was delightful and it made me feel infinitely clever. Oh and the soundtrack is quirky af, I have no clue how they kept it from feeling repetitive because there's only maybe 5-6 tracks?

Next I am on to Metal Gear Solid, which... I am only 45 minutes into it and what is this dialogue man? πŸ˜‚

I know it was the 90s and this was the era of badass lady killer masculine heroes but I was not prepared for snake to go 2 for 2 with flirting with the female characters lmao. Not really a critique I suppose, just something we really don't see anymore haha. I can already tell this game is going to kick my ass though, I am piss poor at stealth.

Btw, this is my first Kojima game. Wish me luck, I don't know what to expect!

Any-hoo, the next video is still scheduled for October 25th. Production on that is slow and steady, there is a LOT of info to get through and right now I'm trying to piece it together in as interesting an order as I can without ever getting too bogged down in details, ya know? But the good news is, we have a winner as the thumbnail, I can already tell. This one is mad clickable, title and all.

I hope you guys are doing well! Remember, nothing is decided until it happens. Take a chance, play it out, give yourself a chance! Even if you don't succeed in whatever it is you're after, simply the vehement pursuit of that success changes who you are. Grow today my friends, win or lose.

Man that makes me very interested to keep going because I love that intricate "everything affects everything" gameplay. I've been informed how the cigs work in this first one and I love it haha

Ooooh hell yeah! Are you going to PAX?

Daryl Talks Games

I would argue that Kojima pioneered thinking of games as real environments that breathing characters live within. Metal gear solid psx has some great examples of this. If you stand outside in the cold for too long, snake will sneeze, which can create a sound that alerts guards. And guards can follow his footprints in the snow to find him. And with each game, the attention to detail to make each game come to life just grows and grows. By metal gear five, every level is a sandbox that you can tackle (and fail) in so many different ways.

I’ve been curious of Obra Dinn for a while now so I’ll probably commit to coming it a shot! PAX is happening in Melbourne Australia on Friday-Sunday so that’ll be fun for gaming as well 😎 Also the motivational quotes/sayings are really nice when they appear, thanks for them :)
