I personally don't like it and think it's a really bad conclusion for the dedicated fans of the series and many others do too. There's very little good about it thematically and it just feels very off. It was very "safe" in the regard it didn't take risks the first 2 took. The only thing good about it is John Powell's score. He carried his weight but unfortunately, the writers didn't. I saw a YT comment regarding this from Audrie Greywind, where she said the original 3rd movie had a totally different story, and Drago was meant to return since we never saw him die. The team was very excited about the story, but Universal didn't like it, so they fabricated Grimmel, a generic villain as a replacement. I'm led to believe the team felt disheartened and demotivated after hearing the news that they can't continue with their original plans and the result of them forcing to put something together was the 3rd movie we got. If you want peace of mind, think of the end of the franchise as being the end of the 2nd movie. It still works really well. 2023-06-09 16:46:48 +0000 UTCAnother thing I'd like to add is how the villains in riders and defenders and in rtte consistently get better to always present a challenge to the riders. Initially the bad guys had crossbows, swords and catapults (Alvin/Dagur) Then they got winches, chain launchers and dragon root arrows in rtte with Ryker Then they got dragon proof chains Then dragon proof winches And now we have dragon proof ships And you'll soon see what comes next after that very soon... Making the villains get progressively better along with the riders just makes the story more intriguing and 100x better. It's what makes Viggo and his empire such a threat. Because Hiccup and the riders know that Viggo will always try to get the upper hand in whatever way he can. And it just feels natural given the story's progression. It's a constant battle between the 2 on who can out-smart the other, aka Maces and Talons.

It makes more sense from the story but unfortunately, the writers had to make it so that the story focused on the main characters we see in the movies so they had to write it in a way that's consistent with the movies.
