Sisters In Control - Chapter 15

Chapter 15

Jesse couldn´t believe how lucky he was. Although, it might not be just luck alone.

He worked very hard, came here every day, at the same time, looking for her. Although, that hard work might be mistaken for being a stalker. It´s… for the best if he doesn´t mention it. She might think he´s a weirdo, what are the chances she thinks he worked hard for her and not think he´s an obsessed man?

Jesse made his way home, happy. This worked out very well. And her words still echo in his mind.

Date, she called it a date. He didn´t, she did. Jesse was so excited, he was so happy, he was speechless. She got her number, on his own. He asked a woman out without the need for help, no one else did, but him.

He felt thrilled, excited, capable! He took care of this on his own. No need for this date to be arranged, no need for an awkward double-date.

He´s got the name of the pretty lady, Sharon. He has her number, and he knows she´s a nurse. The rest, he´ll find out on that date.

The only question is… when? When would it be a nice time for that date? Well, it´ll depend on her schedule, she´s a nurse, with a real job. Her schedule will dictate the day and time.

Most likely, their date will take place during the night time. Now, on what day of the week? On her free day? On a working day?

He´s got so many questions, but so do his sisters…

“That´s wonderful!” Corrie cheered as he gave them the good news.

Jesse told them all about her. Well, all he knew about her. It wasn´t that much information.

“No way, did she actually gave you her number?” Maevis asked, “was it out of pity?” She teased.

“Of course not! She… she liked me!” Jesse complaint, looking up at his amazon sister´s mocking smile.

“Oh, is that so? How come we know that´s not a fake number? Did you call her already? Texted her?” she teased some more.

“Come on, Mae. Give him a break, he just met her. And I know no one would do such a thing to him. Who´d be so despicable?” Corrie said, smiling, but internally she was mad at the idea someone might´ve tricked him.

“It´s… it´s her real number, ok?” Jesse argued, looking at Maevis in a defiant way.

“Have you called?” Maevis asked.

“No! Because I don´t want to seem desperate! I´ll call her… within a week.” He said. He had a plan, he won´t call immediately, he´ll call her later. Pretending he called when he had some time, like a chill dude would do.

“A week? Hahaha! She´ll think you don´t care.” Maevis said.

“She won´t! She´ll think I´m just chill, that I… maybe I´m busy and just remembered to call her.” He said.

“So, you want her to think you´ve got better things to do than to call her? Hmm? That she´s not that important to you?” Maevis asked.

“That´s… not with those words, but… I want her to think I´m not desperate.” He said.

“Jesse, I think that´s not such a good idea. Like Mae said, she´ll think you don´t care about her. That´s not kind.” Corrie said.

“But… I had a plan…” Jesse started, now both of them had made him doubt.

“What? The plan of not dating her?” Maevis teased.

Why do they have to criticize every single thing he does? That doesn´t help his confidence at all.

But they were right. Maybe a full week was… too much. It´ll be for the best to call her, or even text her, as soon as possible. That way she´ll know he´s interested. Not desperate, just interested.

“So, how tall is she?” Maevis asked.

“How tall? Why does that matter?” He asked.

“It doesn´t, I just want to know. You said her name´s Sharon, that she´s a nurse, but… just out of curiosity, how tall is she?” Maevis asked.

“Uhm… she´s tall, about… 6´3”?” He said.

“That´s not tall.” Maevis replied.

“She´s tall!” Jesse complaint.

“Nah-ah, if she was tall, then she´d be taller than me. But 6´3”? I´m taller than that. Maybe she´s tall, for you.” Maevis explained.

“Come on, Mae, give him a break. Besides, she is tall. I mean, not taller than us, but 6´3” is a lot taller than Jesse.” Corrie explained, then looking down at him and coming up with an idea. “Aren´t you concerned about the height difference?” she asked him.

“Huh?” He looked at Corrie in confusion.

“You know, you´re 5´5”, if she´s 6´3”, that means she´s a whole foot taller than you. You should know better than to try and date such tall ladies.” Corrie explained.

“But… you two have been pairing me up with tall women all this time. One of them was even taller than you!” He argued, pointing at Corrie, the 6´8” sister.

“Yeah, but we make sure they are not crazy. We know nothing about this… Sharon. In fact, is she fat? Hmm? Maybe… do you like chubby ladies?” Maevis said.

“What? Why would you even ask that? No! She´s fit, ok? Not… sure if she works out or if she´s just… you know, with a nice built. She´s… she´s not chubby, she´s like… slim, but with curves… gosh, don´t ask me that kind of things!” He couldn´t find the right words to describe Sharon.

“Hahahaha! Oh, look at you, unable to describe her. You´re so easy to tease, lil´ bro. How can we know you won´t get mad at her just like you do with us? Hmmm? Maybe you´ll throw a tantrum in the middle of the date.”

“I will not!!!” He screamed.

“See? You´re losing it already.

Jesse was so upset to what Maevis was saying. She was just teasing him, she loved to tease him. As she said, it was too easy. And Corrie knows that, that´s why she always stand up to defend him. Even from Maevis, of should it be said, most of the time it´s because of Maevis?

“Ok, Mae. Enough. Stop teasing our brother.” Corrie said.

“Pfft, whatever…” Maevis said. It was fun to tease Jesse, but it wasn’t fun when Corrie stepped in.

To Maevis, Corrie ruins all the fun. So what if she wants to tease Jesse a bit? Corrie always takes things far too serious, and every time she picks Jesse´s side.

That´s why she always steps back when Corrie says so. She´s no fun. But she´s getting kind of tired of it.

---

They were sticking their noses far too deep into his date. But they might be right about one thing. He can´t wait too long to ask her out.

Jesse should make his move quick. Not because they said so, but because, being Sharon such a fine lady, someone might come in and ruin his chances.

That night, when he was on his room, he texted Sharon.

He spent almost an hour thinking on what to write. How to begin, that was the hardest part. “Hello, I´m the ketchup guy. Remember me?” that could be either funny or too dumb.

Should he try and be romantic? Should he look for something online? Like, what´s the best way to begin a conversation through a message? How to text for dummies, something like it would be of good use.

He was tired of overthinking this. After an hour, he decided to just send the most normal message he could.

Why should he try and pretend to be someone he´s not? She seemed to like him for who he was.

“Hello, Sharon. I´m Jesse, the guy from the store. I just wanted to say hi. I´m looking forward to meet you, do you have any idea when we might meet? No rush, just wanted to know if you had any idea. Looking forward to your reply!” And sent.

Would a smiley face be too much? Was the message too formal? He has no idea, but it´s normal, that´s the only thing he wants.

Then, after he sent it, he just waited. And waited, and waited.

If she replied quick enough, then she´s as thrilled for the date as he is. And if she doesn´t, then, what does that mean?

She forgot about him? Does she not care? Maybe she´s asleep? Who knows.

And he won´t know until tomorrow. Hopefully. Right now, he can´t help but to feel tired. He´s been using more of his energy lately, searching and searching for her at the store. Now that he found her, now that his quest is over, it´s time to rest.

---

The night flew by, in fact he didn´t even feel like he slept.

Jesse closed his eyes, and before he even had a chance to feel anything during his sleep, he woke up.

Was it because of the urge to check on his phone? Was he desperate?

The answer´s yes, he was kind of desperate. But not necessarily to find out what she replied, part of this was because he was kind of tired of the set-up dates.

If he truly wanted to give a big step, he needed to get a date on his own. And this was it.

He turned, his eyes half-way open, his arm reaching for his phone. What will he find there? A message of her? Nothing? A random notification?

He was too sleepy to have any worries or hopes. All he did, in his half-asleep state of mind was to pick his phone and turn it on.

The light of the screen was so bright, forcing him to close his eyes again. Then, as his eyes adjusted to the light, he checked on his notifications.

Spam e-mails, some random promotion of his phone company, a few notifications of creators that had dropped a new post on their social media. And, at the very top, which he skipped for some reason, he found a message from hers.

"Hi there! I´m not so sure yet, I mean, I´m kind of busy this week. I´d love to say we can go out this Saturday, but I´m a bit unsure about my schedule. Do you mind if I confirm with you on Friday? Sorry, I don´t mean to say no, I´m just unsure.” Was that a yes?

It´s a yes, right? She´s unsure on the date, but that´s a yes, definitely.

Now, what does everyone think about it?

“Hahaha! She rejected you!” Laughed Maevis, straight to his face.

“Stop! She said that she´d tell me on Friday!” He argued.

“Why couldn´t she say yes? Hmm? Oh no, she just postponed her rejection!” And she laughed again.

“Mae, come on, don´t be mean. It´s not a no, she said she was busy, that´s all.” Corrie said.

“Corrie, how many times have you been “busy” as an excuse not to date someone.” Maevis asked.

“Well… not… not once actually…” Corrie admitted.

“Sorry, I forgot no one really asks you out.” Maevis teased.

“People have! But I just… immediately tell them they´re not my type. At least I´m honest!” Corrie explained, raising her voice at her mocking sister.

Jesse just watched them, as Maevis laughed at Corrie, and she just frowned at Mae. But there was something that stuck on his mind. What if Sharon was going to avoid him?

What if she chose not to set a date only because she didn´t want to date him?

His reply was: “Ok! No worries! I´ll wait for you.” And he was yet to receive an answer.

Was she actually busy? Or was he only a fool? She was so sexy, too much for him. A sexy nurse, a sexy, 6´3” nurse. What is she going to see in him?

Maybe his only answer was to fall in despair. To lose all hopes and acknowledge the fact that she won´t ever date him.

---

He shouldn´t let this kill his hopes.

Jesse decided one thing, he´ll wait for Friday, and if nothing happens, if she doesn´t want to date him, or doesn´t even reply at all, he´ll move on.

He can´t deny he´s more confident. If he could ask out a woman, if she didn´t give him a fake number, then there´s still hope.

Her reply was brief. “Ok! I´ll tell you later. Sorry again.” He was hoping that last sorry was not her apologizing for rejecting him.

Now, this meant one thing, he won´t lose hope, at least not until Friday…

---

The week went on. What was he thinking throughout the whole week? Well, he couldn´t stop thinking about his date; he couldn´t stop picturing Sharon´s angelical face.

He had decided that days should go on, and they should be so without him thinking about his date. Or the possibility of the date. He knew that there was a chance, that the odds were fifty-fifty if the date will, or will not, take place.

But his own mind, his own eagerness to meet Sharon once more, was not the only reminder.

Aside of the usual. Which would be women with her same hair color, nurses, hospitals, things that reminded him of her, Jesse´s consistent reminded of his date were… his sisters.

They went on, over and over, asking him if he had a day, a time, an idea of the place.

Most of the time, Corrie was bugging him. He couldn´t get too mad at her, she just wanted to take care of him. She asked, at least once a day, if she had already said something. She would often tell him about places they could go to, things he could try. She cared, but she was acting as if this was her own date.

On the other hand, we have Maevis. Who…loved to tease him. Constantly trying to kill his hopes by telling her she was taking too long to give him an answer. That she was not interested. And all was said with her annoying laughter at the end. He knows she doesn´t mean most of what she said, but she was annoying him; all for her own amusement.

They shouldn’t step into this. He was the one who got a date, the only reason why he told them was because he didn´t want them to set him up for anything else.

Both of them, mostly at dinner time, mentioned they could try and set him up on a date with some lady. A friend of theirs, a relative of some co-worker, someone they met at the gym. He didn´t need any of it. He found a person, and right now, he was just waiting.

Waiting, and waiting. Checking on his phone, making sure she didn´t send any message. Double checking if he missed a call of hers, a text, any sign, anything that could mean she had found a spot for him.

Now, he was wondering, is this problematic? A woman who´s this busy, could she be a nice couple?

Well, he should be fair, if things work well, she´ll take more of her free time to spend with him, and he´ll do the same thing. However, he´ll never know if things don´t begin anywhere.

The only thing he could do was to wait. And he waited, and waited… and waited…

---

“Hello! Sorry I couldn´t confirm with you earlier. I had a friend who wanted me to cover tomorrow, but she said her plans changed. So, you and I can go on a date tomorrow, Saturday. Hope you still want to go with me. I´d understand if you don´t.” This was a message of hers.

His heart skipped a beat when he saw her name on his notifications, and his eyes went wide open as he read her words.

Not wanting to go? Does she think she hurt his feelings? Probably, most likely. But who cares! She said yes!

“For sure! I´d love to go out with you! Just pick the place and time.” He´d go anywhere for her.

Hopefully, it´s not an expensive place. And not one too far away. But how cares, it´s a date!

---

“On. Your. Face!” Jesse said as he put his phone right in front of Maevis´s face.

The message right there, for her to read it.

“Wow… she said yes…” Maevis was unimpressed.

“I told you! I told you! I told you!” He repeated constantly.

He had success, he wanted to shove it all right on Maevis´s face. In the meantime, she was looking for a way to get him out of this victorious euphoria.

Her answer came as soon as his phone buzzed. Right before Maevis´s eyes, appeared a new message. A message from Sharon, right beneath his last message.

It had the place, the time, and something else. Maevis smiled, that was perfect.

“Well, well, it seems your date has replied.” That was quick.

“Huh?” Jesse said, immediately directing his attention at the phone, and pulling it back at him. Then, he read her reply, and as he did so, Maevis injected her words of tease.

“Hope you´re able to carry her. I mean, that´s what she meant, right? Or… what does she mean when she asks you to pick her up? You don´t have a car…” She smiled wickedly.

Of course she wouldn´t ask him to, literally, pick her up.

“Thanks for letting me choose! Listen, there´s an Italian restaurant downtown. I´ve been dying to try it! They say that their fettuccini’s amazing! I think we could get there by 8. You can come pick me at my place by 7-7:30. I´ll send you my address, and the one of the restaurant.”

Her message was quite specific. She wants him to pick her up, she´d like him to drive to her place and then, pick her up, to finally take her to the restaurant. To get there together.

Maevis was mocking him because he does not have a car. But he knows how to shut her up.

“Quit it! I might not own a car, but I´m sure Corrie will lend me her car.” That didn´t stop Maevis´s laughter.

A moment later, he asked Corrie, and what was her response?

“Sorry, Jesse. But I can´t lend you my car.” Corrie said.

“What?! Why?” Maevis was standing right next to him as he asked.

“Jesse, you don´t know how to drive.” Corrie replied.

“Of course I do! I have my license! Besides, I´ve already driven your car!” He argued.

“Yes, but only around the neighborhood, and to places that aren´t so far. Listen, in order to get downtown, you have to take the freeway. There´s a lot of cars there, a lot of traffic, and they all go so fast. I´m sorry but… I don´t think that´s safe.”

Jesse froze for a second. All this time, all this wait, only for his date to be ruined by his own sister?
