Jesse´s whole world felt like falling apart. He asked Corrie to borrow her car, he thought she was going to say yes, but she said the opposite.
He felt so lonely at the moment. Out of a sudden, he felt alone in the room. Was there no support from his sisters? This was expected from Mavis, he knew she was going to tease him, to mess with him, to try and torment him. However, Corrie? Her as well?
He felt alone, an alien in the room. He was standing there, in between the towering women. Mavis was giggling behind him, and Corrie was standing in front of him. Unlike Mae, all of what she way was the truth, she´s the serious one, the one who never fools around, who never jokes with what she says.
She said no, he could see she meant it. Instead of allowing him, she thought of all the things that could happen. All of the bad things, the possible incidents. Corrie was overprotective, he could see it on her face. The looks of concern, the worries, she was overthinking this only because it was him who´ll drive the car.
She never cares about what Mavis does, she never really asks her when she wants to borrow the car, at most, she complaints when she burns out all of the fuel; but whenever he asks, which is rarely, the answer´s no?
“But… Corrie?! Please! I…” He wanted to argue, he could do it. Jesse was feeling unsupported, he was feeling so bad, he was not a bad driver, Corrie was just overthinking the whole thing.
“No, Jesse, I will not lend you my car. What if there´s an accident? I won´t be able to live with myself if I know something bad happened to my little bro, and to think I was the one who could´ve avoided it… it´s better to be safe than sorry.” Sure, he´s always the little bro. It´s not his fault that he´s 5´5”. To 6´6” Mavis and 6´8” Corrie, he´s tiny, weak, vulnerable.
“But… I´m an adult!” He argued. He´s a 21-year-old man, isn´t he old enough to be trusted with a vehicle?
“And adults get into accidents too.” Corrie insisted.
There was no point on trying to argue, she was not going to let him borrow the car. Corrie was cool, she was the nice out of them both, but whenever she makes up her mind, no one can chance it. No one can convince her, no one can persuade her. Not even if he used his puppy eyes.
Mavis was laughing behind him. “You heard her, whittle bro doesn´t have big sisters permission.” she teased.
“Mae, that´s enough. You´re going to make him feel bad.” Corrie complaint, looking at Maevis with a frown.
“Hey, it´s not me the one who´s denying transportation.” Mavis said.
“I´m not. Listen, if you need to get there, I can drive you. I have no problem with that.” Corrie offered.
“But… I don´t… she told me to pick her up. She already sent me her address.” Jesse said.
“So? We can go pick her up, and then I can drop you at whatever place you´ve picked.” Corrie said.
“But…” she was going to pick her up? Corrie was going to drive them both? To have his sister do so, it felt… emasculating. Not that it was something awful, she´s trying to help. But Jesse wanted to impress her.
Jesse wanted to impress Sharon, to drive into her place, pick her up, and then drive off to the restaurant. To pick some sits, pay the bill and then, ask her out again. What will she think of him if he doesn´t have a car? He wants to give her a good impression, but Corrie´s ruining it!
“Corrie, Sharon won´t take me seriously if you drive me there.” He said.
“What? Why? You don´t own a car, it´s mine. Besides, what´s the big deal? You know how to drive, that´s not the reason why I´m driving, are you scared she´ll think you don´t know how to drive?” Corrie asked.
“You wanted to lie to her and pretend you have a car, didn´t you?” Mavis interrupted.
“What? No! I… I just… thought it might be cooler to…” He started, feeling overwhelmed as both amazons were now confronting him.
“To lie? You thought it´d be nice to lie about having a car? Jesse, it´s fine. Not everyone owns a car. If she doesn´t like you just because of that, then she´s not worth your time.” Corrie said.
“Yeah. But I don´t think she´ll care. I mean, she was willing to go out with you, I think she´ll take it easy on not having a car.” Was Mavis saying he was ugly or something?
“Listen, I won´t lend you my car. So you can either let me drive you both, or use a cab.” Corrie declared.
This wasn´t fair, why is he always overprotected this way? But what was he supposed to do? Take the car anyways? He´ll get in a HUGE problem. Corrie will lecture him for weeks if he does that!
He gave up, this was not going to happen the way he wants it. So it´ll be for the best to tell Sharon.
“Fine…” he sighed, “I´ll… I´ll ask Sharon.”
“Good! Now ask her at what time she´d like us to be there. Oh! And I´m going to need the address, you know, to work on a schedule.” Corrie said, her face already drawing a smile.
“You´re such a nerd, you know that?” Mavis said.
“I like to plan-ahead, unlike you. That doesn´t make me a “nerd”.” He walked back to his room and allowed them to argue between them.
—
Jesse was lying in his bed, he had his phone in hand and a chat between him and Sharon open. He was wondering what to tell her.
There´s no way he´s going to tell her that his sister will drive them. That´s pathetic, at least that´s how he sees it. Who´ll date a man who´s sister drives him to dates? She´ll think he´s lame! Or at least weird. Wasn´t a date supposed to be an intimate moment?
He was trying to think on a way to lie to her. Jesse was too afraid of telling her the truth. What if she wanted to cancel the date? What if she makes up her mind? It was a miracle that she agreed, two miracles won´t happen with the same person.
“Ok… let´s see…” He was making something up in his mind, and it seems to him that it´ll work.
“Hey, Sharon. How are you? So, I was thinking about our date, and, you won´t believe this, but my car broke down. the engine doesn´t seem to torn on, a lot of smoke came out of it while I was driving back home. So I had to take it to the shop. They are still checking on it but the mechanic hasn´t figured out what´s going on, so it´ll be there for a few more days.” That was a nice excuse, and now, time to tell her about how they will get to the place.
He didn´t want her to think he was trying to cancel the date. It´ll be nice if he could postpone it and convince Corrie to lend him her car, but he knows better, that won´t happen.
“I hate it, I really wanted to drive you to our date, but, you know, car issues. Do you mind if a cab rides us there? I really want to go, I truly do! I don´t want to let my non-working car ruin the date.” And now, time to wait for her reply.
It took a moment, but she wrote back.
“That sounds awful! Are you ok? You didn´t had an accident, did you?” It was cute that she was concerned. And, so far, she hasn´t canceled.
“No, I´m fine. I was pulling down my home´s street when the engine made this loud, cracking noise. But I´m fine, the car´s not LOL. So, I was wondering, would you mind if we use a cab to get there? I´ll pay for it, of course. I just, you know, really wanted to drive us both there.” Maybe he´s insisting too much on the fact that he wanted to drive.
After a moment, she wrote back.
“Thank god. You got me worried for a second. I don´t mind the cab, but I do have my own car. Would you like me to drive us there?” She had a car?
That´s better, that´s much better. It´ll be easier, no need to get a cab to her place and then have the same cab drive them towards their date.
“Sounds good!” He replied.
“Great! Send me your address, I´ll pick you up.” She wrote back.
His address? Suddenly, another problem came to his mind. Does he really want her to meet his sisters?
A problem was fixed, and now, a new one has come. Would it be a good idea to have Sharon come to her place on the first date?
He disliked the idea that Corrie will be with them at the car on their way there. He knows her, she´s going to ask her, over and over, to be careful, to watch what he eats, to make sure he doesn´t eat too fast. Things one shouldn´t be worried about when it comes to a 21-year-old man. Sharon would think they baby him!
If Sharon was to come to his place, he was certain this was going to be worse. And, to make it even worse, Mavis will be there too! She´s going to try and expose him! Make fun of him, to go on and say all embarrassing things she knows about him. And they are a lot!
They were going to trap her at her house, wasting a lot of time as they make Jesse look like an idiot. Each in their own particular way.
He had to stop that, he had to prevent that! She can´t come! At least not on the first date.
What was the solution?
“No worries, I´ll take a cab to your place and we can drive off from there.” She can´t get near his house, not anywhere near his sisters. That will be a problem he´ll deal with later.
“Ok, if you insist. Be here at 7:00. I would like to get there before 7:30, ok?”
“Sure will! See you then!” And that´s how you fix an problem.
Sure, he lied, but it´s just a little lie, no one will be affected, right?
—
A moment later, he came downstairs to give Corrie the news. And to tell Mavis, if she cares.
“I´ll take a cab to her place and then she´ll drive us from there.” He explained.
“She has a car?” Corrie asked, standing in front of him. Mavis didn´t bother to get up from the couch, in fact she didn´t seem to be listening as her eyes were on her phone all the time.
“Yes, so don´t worry about driving me, or driving us. Ok?” He said.
“Are you sure? I could drive you to her place, maybe get to meet her and…” Corrie started.
“No! Nope, hehe, there´s no need. Just… I wouldn´t want to bother you.” He replied, slightly nervous.
“There´s no problem, you know that. I don´t mind.” Corrie added.
“Yeah but… listen, enjoy your evening, don´t mind me. Everything will be fine.” Hopefully.
Corrie agreed to give up and allow him to do his thing. Now, it was time for him to count the days, the hours, the minutes. His date was going to take place.
It´s not really important how they get there, but what he´ll do when they do. But the most important thing was for his sisters not to be a part of it.
It´s not quite nice to want that, they have been supportive, caring, it´s just that, he´s a man. He doesn´t need to be driven, he doesn´t need a chaperone. He´ll be fine.
—
Days couldn´t go as fast as he wanted them to go. Jesse was so excited about his date.
Finally, this was a date he had, on his own! One he got on his own as well. He asked a woman out, a very beautiful lady, and she agreed!
Did he show confidence? Was that the reason why she agreed? He knows he´s not the prime specimen when it comes to men. Sharon was almost a whole foot taller than him, he knows he didn´t amaze her with his height.
He´s handsome enough, that´s what he´ll take. And she might´ve liked him, if she did, because of his attitude, what else could it be? His natural charms? His charisma? Let´s face it, there´s no other explanation.
Unless she´s a desperate woman, in that case… he´ll take it. He might not be proud, but the least of the worse things is that she´s unlucky in love, but wouldn´t that make them have more in common than they think?
His main worry was about what they would talk about. He got into the cab and gave the driver the address.
From that moment on, when he was not chit-chatting with the driver, about the weather or other random stuff, he was planning on what to talk to Sharon about.
Ketchup? Could it be a nice ice-breaker to talk about the particular dressing for which they got to know each other? Maybe they could talk about other dressings she likes? That´s not the best idea.
He´ll start by telling her how lovely she looks, and after that, he´ll just work his way.
—
Jesse was wearing a nice, navy-blue shirt, some nice black pants and matching shoes. He thought he looked elegant.
He carried a box of chocolates, he would´ve picked flowers, but he was afraid he´ll sit on them by mistake. He felt so nervous, his mind doesn´t focus enough when he´s nervous.
But how could he avoid it? Sharon was gorgeous! He´s lucky, there´s no other way to put it.
He got off the cab and walked across her porch.
Sharon lives on a house, not on an apartment. And she has a car of her own. He´s got nothing and she seems to have life figured out already. Maybe she lived with a friend? They share rent? They pay the bills together?
Well, she did say she was a nurse, maybe she does own the house? Or at least is working on paying the mortgage? He doesn´t know, and it´ll make him feel better if he doesn´t think too much about it.
Jesse made his way across the front yard, stepped into the porch and rang the bell.
His legs were trembling a little, he could feel his palms sweating. He was carrying the chocolate box with his right hand, and then, he turned at it, just to make sure it wasn´t soaked with his palm´s sweat. The only thing he found out was doubt. A small insecurity.
“Is… is the box too small?” He wondered as he looked at the golden chocolate box.
It was nice, and it had a nice red ribbon on it. However, does the ribbon look bigger than the box? She won´t think he´s cheap, would she?
“Hello there…” Came Sharon´s voice.
She was standing in front of him, the door to her place was open. When did she open it? He didn´t hear her. Was his mind too focused on the chocolates that he had no idea what was going on around him?
He turned at her, she was so gorgeous, and she looked taller. She used a little boost, she wore four-inch heels, making her a 6´7” amazon. Taller than Mavis, but still shorter than Corrie. Although, she does look as tall as Mavis does when she´s wearing sneakers, maybe slightly shorter.
Jesse found himself overwhelmed by her. She was wearing a blue dress, was it sapphire? Yale? He never really saw the difference. But what he can see is that the color, that dress color, makes her hair look amazing. It matches her skin, her eyes, her hair, that color made her so delightful.
He was overwhelmed, lost in her. She seemed so tall, her body was so perfectly wrapped by the dress. And then, he came back to his senses.
“I… here!” instead of greeting her, he just gave her the chocolate box. Simply stretching his arms towards her and presenting the gift.
“For me? Aww, you shouldn´t have… you´re so kind.” She smiled as she took the box.
What´s the first thing he noticed? If the box looks small in his hands, it looks TINY in hers. The whole box seemed to fit in the palm of her hand! Ok, maybe not, but that´s how he felt, that´s the way his concern made it seem.
“Chocolate, I love chocolate! Thank you, Jesse.” She smiled. Sometimes it´s not the size, but the intention that matters.
“I… I´m gad you liked it.” He felt relieved.
“I do, it´s so nice. And, wow, you´re here on time. That´s two nice things there, maybe I should give you a reward myself.” He swallowed.
Reward? He couldn´t think on anything to say, what kind of reward? A kiss? A hug? Something more… intimate? He could feel steam coming out his shirt, his legs started to tremble, the good thing is that she´s too tall to notice. Else, she´d see the breakdown he´s about to have.
“I wish I had something for you… I guess you wouldn´t settle if I gave you my ketchup bottle, would you?” She chuckled.
Well, at least he´s not the one who came up with the silly ketchup joke. But that was a good thing.
Maybe Sharon´s not superficial, maybe she´s just as silly as he is. A geek, nerdy, not that it´s a bad thing, but it´s the way he is. The difference is that she´s an imposing, a breathtaking amazon and he´s, like Mavis sometimes says, a shrimp.
“Haha, no… I… don´t think we need ketchup tonight.” He chuckled.
“Are you sure? You wouldn´t mind if I ordered steak and put ketchup on it, right?” She said.
“I think… you can eat what you want… I mean, it´s your food, right?” He said.
“Exactly.” She smiled. And then he smiled back.
She seems to have a sense of humor, she seems kind. However, the questions she made, she´s not one of those ladies who want to be the dominant one on the relationship, right?
Asking if he´d mind, was that a joke or a proving question? This is not a test, is it? She´s tall, sexy, a beauty! And he´s… short and average. She didn´t pick him because she´s looking for a beta-male, is she?
He´ll have the whole date to find out. Hopefully, he´s wrong.
