When we think about stuff useful for adults with ADHD, we always think about fidgets, bujos, and sticker charts. What about... kids toys?? So lets ask ourselves why stuff meant for kids actually works for adults with ADHD.

What are some things that were originally for kids that you use because it clicks with your brain and your ADHD? What are some other things made for kids that you maybe don't own but think would work great for you or possibly other ADHDers? Comment below!

I love the sensory stuff. I just got a glitter bottle kit and a fidget cube. I also use the small balls with the bells in them because they relax me and I have PSA and RA also so it helps my hands. My mom was a librarian as well Ann I never had a problem with YA books and I found a kids book on ADD and emotional regulation. I have the hardest time with de clutter because I get everything I think I want. It was so good to see your final little check before checking out. I need to do that! I have bath toys colorful and soft spa items and flame less candles it makes me take better self care. I keep a box by my bed with wipes deodorant toner pads perfectly rose water spray mouthwash dry shampoo etc. When I don’t get into the actual shower those days I have those and know where they are.

I mostly write with those pencils because it feels less “permanent” and like I always have the option to erase whatever I’ve written whether that’s a journal or work notes. Perhaps it’s also a tactile thing that pencils write with more friction than a pen. My default “fidget toy” at my desk is the Eos lip balm that comes in a spherical shape. For some reason the twist of the cap has a really great feeling and I often use it during work calls. It doesn’t make noise and I can do it out of view of the camera under my desk while I’m talking. I felt myself have some judgement about getting kids bath toys but you’re right, if it encourages more baths which are great self care, why not! Too bad a new bathtub and bathroom aren’t as simple of a fix to make me more motivated to take a bath. 🙃

2022-06-09 22:32:54 +0000 UTCMy mother was a children's librarian before she had me, & a firm believer in "a good kids' book is a good book, period," which I'm sure helped with the stigma thing; I get reading fiction under my "will just not stop focusing" mode, tho, which makes it a bad choice for bedtimes... I've been enjoying the upsurge of fidget stuff for my kid, who has a far more hyper presentation than I ever have (and her school does awesome units on self-regulation which I wish I'd had at her age!), but the main new thing I've really been enjoying for me is all the comics and very pop-science takes on actual life problems that have been coming out recently. That Burnout book w/ the tldr lists on stress management lessons at the ends of chapters for instance, & a bunch of other things that are semi-pandemic inspired since suddenly everyone else is noticing executive function as something that needs addressing... And with decades of experience selectively applying advice for other people, a far higher percentage of these is useful to me, which is lovely.

The plastic building blocks you decided that you didn't like during unboxing are really loved by my ADHD daughter. She keeps them in a little cardboard box and builds 3D sculptures with them. I agree the packaging on yours was pretty terrible though. Would recommend taking scissors to the packaging and gotten a better container. Same goes for keeping legos. Contain them in many organizer bins. My girls all love the Wings of Fire book series. Enjoy!
