His relationship with his zanpakuto spirit is also really interesting to me. Thinking about how Oetsu describes zanpakuto and shinigami, Shunsui's really feels like a partnership. The fact that he and his zanpakuto spirit act like an old married couple fits his character. It's definitely not a master/servant relationship. Again, thinking of Shunsui as a being that is centuries old, you can imagine the type of relationship he'd have with a spirit that's been by his side that whole time.

Shunsui's Bankai is my favorite in the series. Both his shikai and bankai are related to the word "play," but with different meanings. A popular theory is that a shinigami's shikai and bankai represent their outer and inner selves, respectively. I don't know if this holds true for everyone, but it would make sense for Shunsui - childish shikai and serious, melancholy bankai. It's also my headcannon that in the same way that his shikai can play different games, his bankai can perform different plays, and either way he's at the whim of his sword. In the anime, you hear his zanpakuto spirit narrating the play. I also really like the scale of his bankai. For a shinigami as old and powerful as him, its grown to something that's almost beyond his control - he has to be careful how he uses it lest others be caught up in it. It's not quite on the scale of Yamamoto's that could destroy Soul Society, or Squad Zero's that can shake the worlds, but it's on a bit of a larger scale than the younger captains.

Now you know why he didn't use it against Starrk.

The Seven Deadly Sins

● I think you read that wrong. Lille was the FIRST Quincy to be bestowed a Schrift by Yhwach, not the last. ● I love that this fight lowkey recodifies Kyoraku's zanpakutō as a darkness/shadow type. We don't have any others of those in BLEACH, except maybe Ichibe's using "black". And the way Kubo takes the concept of "play" from playing games to going through the acts of a stage play. Never would've guessed that'd be the direct his bankai would go. ● The bankai-stealing plot was dropped after the Shin'eiyaku pills were introduced, which is a real shame. It's fine that it was resolved for the shinigami, but I wish it had lasted longer at least. ● Bringing Katen's spirit into the canon from the Zanpakutō Rebellion filler was a nice surprise back in the day. Kinda which we'd seen more, but I guess it allows us to sort of consider the other spirits in that arc as pseudo-canon, so that's cool. ● Kyoraku's relationship with Katen is adorable. ● Honestly, you read far enough that you could go ahead and watch episodes 35 and 36 now. You'll just need to finish reading those chapters before watch episode 37. ● OMZ, Zangetsu, Zabimaru, and Hyorinmaru are the only zanpakutō spirits we've seen in the manga. But again, with Katen being brought in from the filler arc, and nothing to really contradict the appearence of any of the others from that arc, they could be taken as pseudo-canon. Another spirit from that arc makes an appearance in CFYOW, which is also pseudo-canon at best.
