A Citations Needed Live Show to Benefit Court Watch NYC

Join us for a discussion about how the media––both news and pop culture––influence the public and jury pools in favor of prosecutors and the police. From pro-cop propaganda dramas on TV to racist news reports, by the time most “defendants” sit down in a courtroom, an entire propaganda apparatus has worked to disadvantage them and poison the perceptions of their “peers.”
We will also speak with representatives of Court Watch NYC to discuss the media’s effect on their work and the broader movement to monitor and tear down the carceral state.
Net proceeds from the event will go to Court Watch NYC.
Court Watch NYC, a New York-based collaborative project with VOCAL-NY, the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund, and 5 Boro Defenders, that collects real-time data on what is actually happening in courtrooms and captures the narratives not reflected in official accounts.
