News Brief: Wonder Woman Pays Homage to the Reagan Era with Gross 1980s-Style Orientalism

In this Patron-only News Brief, we review the holiday season's biggest (and only?) major release, Wonder Woman, and breakdown its bizarre, half assed anti-Muslim racism.

I know you all got your laughs making fun of Felix, but you know who else liked asking women about their day at work? That's right: Friedrich Engels. So... yeah. Maybe think about that.

Citations Sins lol, really enjoyed this one

Whats worst your dealing with a character that would NOT be defending the IDF but would see a oppressed people and help them first and formost. Gal Gadot it seems had more influence in this film then people want to know.

Chapo did a nice takedown of this movie just before you guys, and covered a lot of the same territority-- including specifically the fake "only the Zionist IDF lady cares about Arab children" scene, & the total incoherence of the film. If they're going to make big movies set anti-Muslim racism-propaganda pieces, at least it's good to know that the film is $hite that most people might not even watch to the end.

From how you guys described it, it sounds utterly incoherent and incredibly cringe.

I was never going to watch this and now that goes double. However I do like having an example in my back pocket whenever someone doesn't know what Orientalism is. I was using 300 for so long.

Hey now, not all of us get over lost love. Anyway, lack of synthesizers is a terrible choice for an 80s movie.

here is at least a preview article from last year that mentions the USSR so I'm happy to not being going insane from quarantine (or at least that this memory isn't a sign of it) https://www.insider.com/wonder-woman-1984-official-trailer-2019-12

Again, I'm unsure how true that is, that's vaguely how it progressed as I remember it but it may help to investigate that. At the very least it makes thw picking 1984 make sense in a way that I genuinely think is true based off of what I remmeber happening? But I'm not sure enough to plant that flag and call it what happens, juat offering a theory to investigate shpuld you care further about it

Ok so the 1984 thing I'm undure about because I'm leaning on a very bad memory of rumors with no spurces to cite, but from what I understand, the first movie was of course about WW1 and it kind of had to be because it was about stopping a big scary inhumane weapon that was gonna drop and if it was set in WW2, a country kinda did that and that's not cool for Hollywood to criticize the u.s. military. So then the movie was titled 1984 because the badguy was gonna be the USSR and it was a homage to overtly anti-communist scrawl 1984 by george Orwell (I know for people who don't see the anti-communism in 1984 Orwell can serve as a "leftist" author of sorts and actually draws good proncipled left wing like media criticism and stuff but Orwell was a raging racist anti-communist who meant that to be an anti-communist scrawl, as well as Animal Farm, and that's why those books are common, and promoted in the u.s. by beig read in schools or claimed as all time greats). Then apparently it became apparent that if you do WW1 to fight a baddy instead of WW2 then go after the USSR that's like too obvious of an avoidance of opposing Nazism, and especially in an age of calling out overt eno-Nazi followings of Trump that's gauche, so thibgs progressed exactly where u.s. foreign policy addled liberal brain goes, and that's towards Islamaphobic "West Asia bad" narratives which obvious people who decide to hire Gadot as the lead are all for.

The film did have Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Welcome to the Pleasuredome in a scene. Which may be the only moment I enjoyed.

I think the only thing I'm not going to like about this news brief is the "brief" part...
