News Brief: The Central Importance of the "California as Failed Socialist Experiment" Fantasy
Added 2022-04-15 14:43:46 +0000 UTC
In this Patron-only News Brief, we break down why it's so important to both right-wingers and carceral liberals that California be propped as a failed socialist nanny state that's gone too far, rather than what it is: a land of runaway capitalism and inequality.
Yup, the phrase "service resistant" gets tossed around a lot. As well a lot of outright fascistic language from NIMBYs about how the homeless people are actually coming in from out of town to destroy our beautiful community, and that we need to restore an imagined prior glory by purging them through state violence.

Yes! In my "super lib" CA city we have a similar problem.. no official housing first policy, but the city claims to prioritize housing. Very little housing is available for the homeless or low income (or even middle income let's be real), but the city ensures a handful of 1-night shelter beds are available each night. This allows them to say housing is available and people just don't want it, legally (and to many residents morally) justifying their constant camp sweeping and criminalization of homelessness. Socialist utopia my ass ☹️

Thanks for the episode guys, it's crazy that these people see a mental health system where the largest provider of mental health services is the jail system, and then have the gaul to say 'look we tried our best and it's destined to fail". How about just a system where the person in charge of treating your mental health was at least professionally supposed to treat it. We means test all the recipients but seem so very bad at establishing any level of compitence for those dispensing the assistance.

This is unfortunately a disappointment especially when it comes to Cenk and Ana especially Ana in this regard.

The "housing first" shit is so annoying. In Boulder they have a "housing first strategy" but it's really housing last. The fastest anyone has ever gotten housing out of it was 5 months, and it's usually around 2 years, and it's only for a very small minority of unhoused folks. The liberal politicians say "housing first is how you end homelessness" and then cut other programs like the homeless shelter, which sucks, but is necessary harm reduction in lieu of free housing.

I thought I remembered that name Michael Shellenberger, when Adam mentioned it during this episode and yes indeed.. not too long ago I watched him getting quite the friendly interview with Ana Kasparian from TYT.. he even mentioned on his Twitter that TYT was the only"progressive" outfit who'd have him on.

That Shellenberger guy has some almost comically duplicitous takes on climate change (cf. "Apocalypse Never")

The point made about the difference between woopsies on the death penalty and woopsies when it comes to “welfare fraud” really hit for me. It’s such a bad faith position.

And yet we rarely hear about what a horrible failure Sam Brownback was and how his conservative fantasy experiment ruined Kansas
