Great commentary, CN. In reply to the clip from Tucker Carlson's show, I share the suspicion of the hosts that his concern about mental health is disingenuous, yet I think we can engage the matter earnestly. If his position is that conditions of lock-down and isolation contributed to poor mental health outcomes for kids, that's totally plausible to me-- it can and is being studied. So, how 'bout the consequences of further militarizing schools? How would adding more guns, fences, police, drills, etc. affect the mental health of schoolchildren? We don't have to accuse people like Carlson of lying in order to take them to task.

These "solutions" are horiffically out-of-touch with the actual needs and desires of students. I graduated high school last year, and it was a constant complaint that all this security theater made the everyday processes of attending class needlessly tedious and obnoxious. Clearly, what we need is fewer entrances and massive buffers between the start of the campus and the actual school building! Putting aside the obvious impracticalities (I'm sure one locked entrance and exit door will work out great in the event of a fire), the principle of it is completely batty.
