Ryan Cliffside

March's model is Ryan. (Yes, we share the same name!) Last spring I explored a Rhode Island graffiti park and ocean cliffside with a boy I met on instagram. A fan of my page, Ryan messaged me that he would love to model nude for me, although he had never done anything like it before. A 19-year-old college film student, Ryan shoots on film himself, and he was excited to discuss and contribute to the creative direction of our first shoot. We shared our favorite nudes in nature from photographers like Bruce Weber and Herbert List and he sent me photos of his clothing to choose from (we went with a lot of ripped denim).

A few days before our planned shoot day, the weather forecast became incredibly rainy, windy and cold. But instead of cancelling, Ryan insisted he was ready to brave the elements in the nude. I brought a bathrobe for him to wear between shots, but for several hours Ryan stripped down, allowing me to capture his beautiful, smooth body amongst the bright graffiti, jagged cliffside and crashing waves below.

As the rain got harsher and the wind got colder, we fell into an exciting rhythm of challenge and acceptance. Would he climb to the top concrete floor of the graffiti park and strip to his blue boxer briefs in view of the rest of the park? Would he lay in the window and stroke his hard body even after the cops had stopped us earlier and told us to "stay decent"? Would he climb to the edge of the cliff on all fours, spreading his red chapped ass for the camera? Ryan's brave answer was always yes, and I'm proud of the harsh, sweet beauty we achieved together on that cold, cold day.
