The Truth Behind Why Trying Harder Doesn’t Work (When You Have ADHD)

Hello, Brains! Let’s dive into why "try harder" doesn’t work for ADHD brains. We’ve all heard it, right? But the thing is, most times it isn’t about effort. Most of us are already trying really hard—probably harder than people realize. ADHD comes with its own set of challenges that trying harder just can’t fix. So instead of pushing ourselves to exhaustion, let's talk about what to do instead.

Thanks to Sunsama for sponsoring this video! Sunsama understands that it's not pushing yourself to do more—it's about working smarter by planning your week in a way that works with your ADHD brain. If you’ve been trying harder and feeling stuck, give Sunsama a try. They’re offering a free trial with no credit card needed if you use my link: https://www.sunsama.com/a/jessicafromhowtoadhd. It’s an ADHD-friendly tool that works with your brain, not against it!

.... I've had several more months to reflect 😅

I genuinely thought my effort was simply mirroring what NTs do and it took me such a very long, embarrassing, and maddeningly long time to discover over the last 4 years. NT kids pick up quickly on the NT expectations; we're told we're too slow/too sensitive/too whiny/too lazy/ too too too too too. I finally caught up and ran a damn marathon while the NTs are walking a 1k. My life is friggin exhausting and it's also just how I roll now, which has made me a bit mentally feral and generally disgusted by the laziness I witness every day from NTs.

Aside: I just noticed that the biggest online shop in the Netherlands now has a Dutch translation available for pre-order, to be released on 14th of November! Non-affiliate link: https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/how-to-adhd/9300000176208899 Will be ordering that to give to my Brainy niece :)

This was very timely for me and may have helped my relationship with my spouse, so thank you.

I'm so used to "try harder" and most things in life being tedious that I'm prone to overworking and burnout -- not to mention a LOT of frustration with "lazy" people, whom I now know to be largely NT folks for whom most things are built in our various societies.
